As it is said, if there is a qualified and capable lama, take (the vows) from him. If not, it is said that taking them in front of a representation will also generate (the vows). According to the Sutra of the Essence of Space and the Compendium of Training in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, even if a root downfall occurs, it is said that confessing in a dream before the Essence of Space will restore it. If the vows of a vidyadhara are broken due to a root downfall, if the lama is nearby, take (the vows) from the lama. If not, taking self-initiation oneself will restore the vows. If it is not like that, then taking self-initiation will become meaningless. For a person who possesses the three vows, the three vows in the same continuum, the lower vows are distinct, and the higher vows are common. Therefore, the lower vows are included in the higher vows, so their essence is one. However, because of the uncommon root downfall of the lower vows, the higher vows are not harmed. For example, if a bhikshu bodhisattva commits a pārājika of unchastity, but the uncommon root downfall of a bodhisattva has not occurred, then the vows of a bodhisattva are not abandoned. If they are abandoned, then for both ordained and lay bodhisattvas, because there is no difference in the uncommon precepts of a bodhisattva, lay bodhisattvas would also have to engage in unchastity. The lower (vows) are the distinctions of the higher (vows), and the higher (vows) are the commonality of the lower (vows). Therefore, the root and branch downfalls of the lower (vows) will become the downfalls of the higher (vows) as appropriate. For example, a bhikshu vajradhara, without the exceptions mentioned in the tantras, if he transgresses the precepts of the lower two (pratimoksha and bodhisattva vows), it will become a branch downfall of a vidyadhara. "From the precepts of the lower two, without need, transgressing," as it is said. The implication of that is that if a bhikshu vajradhara has the exceptions mentioned in the tantras, even if he transgresses the root and branch downfalls of the lower (vows), there is no fault. If a bodhisattva bhikshu sees great benefit, there is no fault in engaging in some branch downfalls of the pratimoksha. "One should not take gold, etc.," and "A guest should not claim it as his own," etc., there is no fault in engaging in some branch downfalls of the pratimoksha, and it is said that if one does not engage in them, it will become a downfall. In general,

In the continuum of a single individual, there are three sets of vows, each having two aspects: common and uncommon. The lower two sets of vows in the continuum of a Bhikshu Vajradhara, once empowerment is received, will also be included within the Vidyadhara vows. If this were not the case, one would have transcended the restrictions of the lower two, and therefore it would not become a branch downfall of the Vidyadhara. Abandoning the fourteen root downfalls, such as disparaging the guru, is the uncommon vow of the Vidyadhara, because only taking the Vidyadhara vow will result in a root downfall; it will not for others. Similarly, the Bodhisattva vows also have two aspects: common and uncommon. The Pratimoksha vows in its continuum, once the Mahayana Bodhicitta is taken, are included within the Bodhisattva vows. Therefore, it is also a Bodhisattva vow, and it also exists for Shravaka Bhikshus of that lineage. Abandoning the root and branch downfalls explained in the Maitreya's teachings and the Compendium of Trainings is the uncommon vow of the Bodhisattva, because if one transgresses these, only the continuum of those who have taken the Mahayana Bodhicitta will incur a downfall. As explained, the three vows in the continuum of those who possess the three vows are general and specific, so they are of the same essence. However, it is not the case that obtaining one is like fire and heat, obtaining all, and abandoning one is abandoning all. Therefore, if the root and branch downfalls of the higher vow have not occurred, one will not be defiled by the downfalls of the lower vow. When practicing the three vows, one should primarily focus on protecting the higher vow, and the lower vows should be kept in equanimity according to the circumstances of time and place, as stated in many Sutras and Tantras. Sentient beings have impure appearances, and Buddhas have pure wisdom appearances; this is the tenet of the Mind-Only school. It serves as proof that external objects do not exist. In the Summary of the Great Vehicle, it says: "Hell beings, hungry ghosts, humans, and gods, each according to their kind, perceive the same object differently; therefore, it is said that they are not real." As it is said, even though the same object appears differently to different kinds of beings, whatever appears to whomever, that is
