are the same. After that, he was asked to take a consort. Laypeople are like rolling in a muddy fire pit, while renunciants are like dwelling in a dry and cool room, for he knew the faults and virtues of lay life and renunciation. He reasoned that there would be no opportunity to practice pure Dharma if he were not a renunciant, so he did not take a consort. Thereafter, his parents passed away. He renounced his homeland and its political affairs. Having become a renunciant, he served an Ani (nun) in Sakya (present-day Sakya, Tibet) and studied practice. This holy one, like a brave prince, possessed immeasurable intelligence. One day, he went to the Ani and said: Either I will go up and take the job of a great official and govern the state with Dharma, or I must study the Tripitaka and make the Buddha's teachings flourish. The Ani said: You will not do that. You are happy, and I also benefit. Study practice. But he did not listen. At the age of eighteen, he approached Nyawon and studied the treatises of reasoning. At the age of twenty-three, he composed works such as "Analysis of the Eternal Elimination of Errors" and "Analysis of the Object and Function of Valid Cognition," becoming like the second Dharmakirti. Regarding the way to show the behavior of a renunciant with immaculate conduct: In his own teachings, the instructions on the conduct of a renunciant are: Whoever speaks well of the sacred Dharma and the Vinaya, but after renouncing does not properly keep the precepts, and acts in an improper way according to the Buddha's teachings, that renunciant is a thief of the teachings. Speaking crookedly, yet thinking others are foolish; speech that is not dignified is an improper renunciant. Abandon the deceitful mind and its behavior, and I always rely on honest and straightforward speech. Speaking recklessly, yet thinking others are brave; not guarding speech is an improper renunciant. Abandon the mad behavior of rambling speech, and I always rely on peaceful behavior. Outwardly adorned, yet thinking others are dignified; behavior that is deceitful and cunning is an improper renunciant. Abandon the deceitful behavior of seducing others, and I always rely on honest behavior. Acting as one pleases, yet thinking others are upright; not guarding the senses is an improper renunciant. Abandon the careless and rude behavior, and I

I constantly rely on it. Those who do many things, others consider them foolish. Because scattered desires are not the way of practice, I abandon the behavior of mixed householders. I constantly rely on the way of few desires and contentment. Enjoying wealth, others consider it glory. Because greed and attachment are not the way of practice, I abandon the behavior of noisy townspeople. I constantly rely on the way of contentment. Going to towns, others consider them objects to be tamed. Because pursuing gain and offerings is not the way of practice, I abandon the behavior of merchants who crave profit. I constantly rely on remote places. It is said, from which it is known. The way of having views and conduct praised by the saints is: In a letter to Jamyang Namkha Rinchen, it says, "Now there are many who boast of being wise here, but few have the wisdom to distinguish between the virtuous and the non-virtuous. Like rabbits chasing wild animals, most people only chase after sounds. There are many who are known as wise, disciplined, and good, but few are saints who cherish the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. Like farmers and merchants who crave profit, most people are pursuing fame and fortune in this life. Here, some taste the poisonous water of false teachings, some cling to the peaks of wrong views, others are immoral and their desires wane, and many are tired of waving empty husks without fruit. Like changing oneself and others, do not deceive, just as iron filings are covered with gold. The inside is full of filth, and the outside pretends to be noble. There are also very many teachers who pretend to be religious like this. Therefore, because of evil views, the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are defiled, which is unbearable. Even if I slightly distinguish between the virtuous and the non-virtuous, there are many who criticize me here now. It doesn't matter if the people of the world are unhappy, but if the saints feel ashamed, living is like being dead. Therefore, if I have any views or conduct that contradict the teachings, please saints criticize and correct them. Since I became a monk in the teachings of the Buddha, until I can distinguish between the virtuous and the non-virtuous, whatever actions I do with body, speech, and mind, I am very careful to do according to the teachings of the Buddha. Because of the strong force of habitual afflictions from beginningless time, if I do something non-virtuous, like remembering after eating poison, I am filled with regret and do it again according to the Dharma. O Shakyamuni Buddha's teachings, which have a thousand rays of light that distinguish reality!"
