The Biography of Redawa Shonnu Lodro The Biography of Redawa Shonnu Lodro Namo Guruve Homage to the Guru). Avalokiteshvara, the treasure of impartial compassion, Manjushri, the lord of immaculate wisdom, Redawa, the crown jewel of the scholars of the snowy land, I prostrate at the feet of Shonnu Lodro. The wonderful deeds performed by you, the holy one, Just as they are described in your own words, I will briefly relate them without exaggeration or diminution. May those fortunate ones listen with pure minds. In summary: The manner of taking birth, considering lineage, The liberation of youth, The immaculate basis for practicing asceticism, The view and conduct praised by the holy ones, The manner of reverently relying on holy beings, How to seek the intention of the Able One, How to find the profound essence of right view, The way of composing commentaries that please oneself and explain to others, The results of teaching and practice, and the propagation of disciples, The essence of what was practiced in the heart, How vows were offered to the supreme deity, How the mind was absorbed in solitary places, How fearlessness of birth and death was attained, Other excellent deeds that were performed, Passing to other realms for the sake of those to be tamed, Leaving behind objects of faith for the faithful to rely on, These are the external summaries of the deeds performed by you, the protector. The manner of taking birth is as follows: In the land where the Buddha's teachings flourished, at the foot of the glorious Sakya mountain, the seat of the lineage of emanations of the protector Manjushri, in a place called Reda (present-day Reting Monastery in Linzhou County, Lhasa), He was born as the son of a great minister of Redawa, who was of the same lineage as the Tibetan King Trisong Detsen. The auspicious signs at the time of conception and birth were similar to those of the goddess Maya, but they are not written down due to their abundance. The biography of his youth is as follows: At the age of ten, he possessed excellent samadhi. His mother sent him to tend the calves, and one day the calves returned but he did not. His mother went to look for him and found him in samadhi at the pasture. Just as the young Siddhartha went to the fields to watch the plowing, became disgusted, and attained the four dhyanas by meditating in the cool shade of a tree.
