Old age has arrived! Limbs and joints are bent, veins and water channels are clearly visible. The body's strength is lost, and the courage of the mind is calmed. Merit is exhausted, and people are no longer kind. The beauty of youth declines, becoming disgusting. Without the power to torment, one can only beg. Eyesight diminishes, and the eyes cannot see clearly. The essence of the elements rots, and the ears become deaf. Muscles atrophy, cheeks become thin, and the flower of blood withers. Vessels are crooked, bulging where they should bulge, and sunken where they should sink. Teeth that grew neatly fall out, and speech becomes slurred. White hair appears on the head, and hair grows on the face. The corners of the mouth are crooked, and black moles appear like Chinese (260a) paintings. Ribs appear on the chest, and neck veins are exposed. Legs and feet become like withered trees, uneven in thickness. The body looks twisted like a pretzel no matter how you look at it. Because of old age, one becomes unhygienic and feels ashamed. Unable to stand, the body sways when sitting. One babbles nonsense, calling out "Ya ya, parents." It is difficult to fall asleep at night, and there is no dawn. One is drowsy during the day and cannot endure heat or cold. Even when lying down comfortably, the joints creak. Unable to control urination, it spills on the cushion. One is repulsive, and young people mock them. Unable to wear proper clothes, it is difficult to endure the cold. Unable to conceal shameful places, they are exposed. Young people find it strange and laugh. Accumulated food and wealth fall into the hands of the wife. Even if one cries out in hunger and thirst, it is said to be pretense. Generally, one is called "old waste" or "old thing." When dying, one says, "I won't die," unwilling to believe it. All love becomes tiresome, and people say, "Just die already." The old and decrepit become weary, wanting to vomit, and longing for death. One cannot confide what is in their heart to others. Crying, one feels weary and lacks food and clothing. Water and fire are not in harmony, and food and clothing are not provided. Praying for the suffering of old age, one longs for death. Third, describing the suffering of illness: The four elements of the body are imbalanced. Diseases of wind, bile, and phlegm (260b) mixed together. Due to ignorance as the cause and hungry ghosts as the condition. Smallpox, plague, intestinal colic, swollen lymph nodes. Wounds from swords and cutting diseases, etc., the four categories. Countless kinds of diseases. Severely afflicted, the wretched patient. Unable to endure the torment of illness. Teeth loosen, lips crack, legs and feet crack, and hands and feet crack. Eye sockets sink, and body hair stands on end. Groaning and uttering foul language, one's speech becomes incoherent. The beauty of the face disappears

Like an earthen doll: intestines and spine are stuck together, flesh, blood, bones, and eyes are blurred. Food and drink are put in the mouth, but the tongue has no taste. The body's essence is exhausted, and the mind's memory is lost. Unable to stand or walk, stuck to the cushion. The soft cushion feels as hard as stone. The comfortably placed pillow feels as stiff as wood. The softly covered clothes feel rougher than coarse cloth. If you try to sit up, they say lie down; if you lay down, they say sit up. Controlled by illness, shame and embarrassment are lost. Hairs fall out one by one, and dust and droplets drip one by one. The days are long, and the nights are also long. Aging in the sun, there is no time to get up. If food and drink are not given, just seeing it makes you want to vomit. Separated from food, it smells disgusting and unpleasant. Medical treatment is not accepted, and whatever is done is harmful. Even if exorcism rituals are performed, the illness does not heal. Even when thirsty, (261a) the doctor controls the amount of food and drink. Guard sleep, guard food, guard travel, don't miss the opportunity. The old serve, the young beat and torment demons. The sick person tells of the suffering of the illness. Trying every possible method, without regret. Guarding the Dharma, reciting Buddhist and Bon scriptures. Guarding the pillow, accumulating doctors and witches as guests. Many relatives and friends surround the end. Unable to prevent and share the illness. No one can take their place, suffering alone. Undergoing bloodletting, burning, and other treatments, enduring the illness even in death. The suffering of sentient beings who are sick is unimaginable. Fourth, explaining the suffering of death: Day by day, the illness becomes more and more uncomfortable. The pulse stops, breathing becomes rapid, and nothing helps. The doctor's face turns black, and the time of death arrives. Especially not cherishing, people will not appear again. Compared to oneself, leaving behind clear memories is even more painful. Letting go of all that is cherished, facing farewell. Death does not delay, and life is summoned. The head cannot be lifted, and the feet cannot support the body. The hands cannot hold the food container, and it falls to the ground. The days are long, and even when the sun rises, one feels impatient. The patient takes off their clothes and stretches out their hands. Saying "Help me up," the eyes twinkle like stars. Who will come to me making a fuss? I am dying (261b) I will say three last words. Even if we die, our minds are elsewhere. Out of a hundred, there is fear of death, there is happiness and unhappiness. Hold my hand, don't cry, be strong. I am thirsty, please get me some water to drink. When I drink it, it comes out of my nostrils. The eyes are bluish, and tears fall drop by drop. This is a sign that the cherished body is about to be abandoned. Demon
