Always precede with hearing and contemplation, cherish solitary practice as the essence. Treasure these five instructions, to the realized Vajrasattva, the monk White Lotus, requested for the benefit of others. Although knowing the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, although understanding the uncertainty of when death will come, although seeing the infallible ripening of karmic results, one does not practice the Dharma from the heart, but is lazy and indolent. Knowing that accumulations will eventually be exhausted, understanding well that compounded things quickly disperse, although knowing that the nature of all things will eventually perish, one constantly accumulates wealth, lazy and indolent. Laziness and indolence are obstacles to virtue, the short-lived Buddha's teachings are the source of goodness and happiness, one does not strive to obtain virtuous results, but claims to be a practitioner, lazy and indolent. Benefit and happiness arise from a qualified Lama, one must rely on him by pleasing him, but if one's desires are not fulfilled, one harbors wrong views, wastes this life, yet hopes to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime, lazy and indolent. All phenomena are the play of mind itself, if one can cut off clinging, one will surely realize it, but one is constantly controlled by sinking, excitement, and dullness, uttering empty words, lazy and indolent. These five instructions on laziness are the meeting place of samsara and nirvana, they are sharp arrows piercing the heart, they are profound key points for practice. This was given by Padma Karpo (White Lotus) in the eastern part of Kongpo, when the monk Sangye Drukgye (Enlightened Buddha Dragon) was about to depart. In the great practice place unparalleled in the midst of the snowy mountains, while practicing at the auspicious pos ky'i yang dben (secluded place) of Ra Lung Thel (place name), these ten examples of impermanence were sung as advice to oneself. To the Indian Ḍombī Heruka, whom the Tibetans call Nāropa Lotsā (Translator Naropa), I pray to the glorious Lord of Speech, inseparable from him. Conventional truths are like bubbles in water, arising and ceasing in an instant, do not be too attached to the insubstantial, but grasp the essence. Compounded things are like trees in water, if examined closely, they have no essence, although illusory and beautiful, do not give rise to desire and craving. The body is like an empty house without an owner, destroyed by wind and rain from the outside, and damaged by grease and grime from within, it cannot be inhabited for long. Life is like a waterfall on a steep cliff, with no time to stop, striving to reach the Lord of Death, do not cling to permanence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
