As the gathering concluded and approached midnight, the master and assistants, clad in garments smeared with black poisonous blood, sat upon wooden chairs. In the center of the ritual, they made offerings to the oath-bound deities. They invoked the protectors with summoning mantras (linga re la bod rbad kyi sngags), rousing and subduing enemies and obstacles. They mixed the deities and food, slaying enemies with the phurba (phur thun), and offered meat, blood, bones, offerings, black grains, and so forth as sacrifices. They visualized the oath-bound deities opening their mouths, nearly spanning the space between heaven and earth, baring teeth as large as ice mountains, tongues darting like lightning, and offered and praised them with one hundred and eight mantras concerning doctrine and the sacred center. Then, they offered to each of the lords of the Eight Classes (sde brgyad) and their retinues, offering twenty-one types of offerings, and praised them individually. Then, they proclaimed the following oath-bound verses: Hūṃ! In the past, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, in the Bodhi forest, how could they forget the vows they made? Please help me subdue the armies of demons! In the middle, the Vidyādharas, in all the Dharma wheels of Tibet, how could they forget the vows they made? Please help me subdue the malicious ones! Finally, we, the mantra holders, in the mandala of practice and offering, how could we forget the vows we made? Please help me slay the enemies and obstacles! Then, they invoked the male lineage of protectors: Hūṃ! Retinue of the Blood-Drinking Mahākāla (khra 'thung ma hA kA lA), Lord of the Assembly, powerful sovereign, Crow-faced one with the wheel, Vajra Rākṣasa, Great Terrifier! Deep blue, one face, four arms, adorned with glorious ornaments, at the moment of subduing terrifying death, standing proudly in the guise of a great king. You are the emanation of all Buddhas to subdue the wicked, now is the time for you to fulfill your deeds, destroy the black demons! Hūṃ! Speech of the Glorious Black Protector (dpal ldan mgon po nag po), powerful and mighty, Swift-acting Six-Armed Black One, now is the time for you to fulfill your oath, destroy the demons and evil guides! Hūṃ! Body of the Glorious Great Protector (dpal ldan mgon po chen po), possessing power and strength, Secret Lord, Four-Faced One, now is the time for you to fulfill your oath, destroy those who harm the Dharma! Mind of the Glorious Great Protector (dpal ldan mgon po chen po), fierce and terrifying, Hūṃ-making Black One, Two-Armed One, now is the time for you to fulfill your oath, destroy the harmful enemies!
