'[He] is yoga and possesses verbal activity.' Furthermore, it says in *Entering the Bodhisattva's Way*: 'One should always be close to a virtuous spiritual friend, who is skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle, and who is committed to the supreme conduct of a Bodhisattva, not abandoning [him] even for the sake of life.' Furthermore, it says in the *Fifty Verses on the Guru*: 'Steadfast, disciplined, and intelligent, patient, honest, and without deceit, knowing the application of mantra and tantra, possessing loving-kindness and skilled in treatises, fully knowing those ten qualities, skilled in the activity of drawing mandalas, knowing the practice of explaining mantras, utterly peaceful and with subdued senses.' In short, entrusting to the mind the supreme meaning of realization, which is the unfeigned intention of the Buddha, the wisdom of profound clarity born together, directly introducing it, thereby wielding power over the kingdom of the three kayas of appearance and existence, the lineage unbroken like a river of empowerment, relying on such a method, one attains the supreme siddhi of Mahamudra, and naturally obtains common siddhis as well, so that the ocean of siddhis never dries up. Polishing the mind itself, the wish-fulfilling jewel, all needs and desires are accomplished in the mind, the lineage undiminished, the light of realization never fading. The profound oral transmission, like milk unadulterated by the marketplace, not subject to the mixture of others, like the essence of profound instructions, possessing the nectar of the quintessence of advice undiminished, one needs a guru with such a lineage. As Jetsun Naropa (Nāropā) said: 'The guru's qualities must include lineage.' Furthermore, the accomplished Geshe said: 'With great wisdom, realizing the truth of reality, with great compassion, unable to bear the suffering of others, with great blessing, able to transform the appearances of others, with great instructions, able to establish the qualities in the lineage of others, with great experience, able to guide the path of others.' Furthermore, Jetsun Tsangpa said: 'Through realization, self-liberation, through compassion, liberating others, skilled in the means of dependent arising, all connections are meaningful.' Therefore, a noble guru possessing these qualities is the embodiment of the Three Jewels: being the essence of all the wisdom, love, and activity of the Buddhas of the ten directions, hence Buddha; being the source of the eighty-four thousand collections of profound and vast teachings, hence Dharma; being the master of all the noble Sangha who speak of knowledge and liberation, hence Sangha. As it is said, the guru is the Buddha, the guru is the Dharma, likewise, the guru is the Sangha, the lord of all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lama is the Buddha!' Thus it is said. Moreover, the essence of the Lama is the Dharmakaya (Body of Truth), as Je Ling said: 'The essence of the Lama is the Dharmakaya, having personally met Vajradhara (the Holder of the Vajra), there is no need to count the distance of the lineage.' My venerable and holy Guru also said: 'The Lama with the name is the Dharmakaya, a precious jewel that is difficult to describe.' If one does not supplicate to such a holy Lama, blessings will not enter. If blessings do not enter, one cannot attain Buddhahood in one lifetime, so supplication is very important. Yeshe Khandro (Wisdom Dakini) said to the Siddha Orgyenpa: 'Emaho! Listen, fortunate yogis! Can supreme and common accomplishments be found elsewhere other than from one's own root Lama? Calm your mind and supplicate!' Thus it is said. If one supplicates to the Lama, all suffering and faults will be eliminated, and without relying on others, one will traverse all the paths and grounds without obstruction, quickly attaining supreme accomplishment. Jetsun Naropa said: 'For all beings, Guru Yoga is auspicious! All wishes arise from supplicating the Lama.' So, how should one supplicate? The Bodhicaryavatara says: 'Cry out with a helpless voice, look with compassion on the sinful me.' The protector of beings said: 'The Lama is high above, we praise him; we are low below, we denigrate ourselves.' Again: 'Supplicate with a face full of tears, supplicate repeatedly like a madman, supplicate saying "What is your fault?"' If one can supplicate to the Lama, even if one does not know the Dharma, it is enough; even if one does not know how to meditate, it is enough; even without strong mantras for protection, it is enough.' Gyalwang Rinpoche said: 'Generate the most supreme perception of the Lama, and a humble perception of oneself, remember the qualities of the Lama, recognize and want to abandon one's own faults, and supplicate from the bottom of your heart.' Again: 'Since the ultimate refuge is the Lama, if you supplicate from the depths of your heart, blessings will enter from the depths of his heart, how wonderful!' The method of meditation is: to meditate on the crown of the head or the palm of the hand, or in the heart. Whoever meditates in the heart will possess the qualities of a thousand Buddhas. Thus it is said. Meditating on the long lineage is like a gathering of people, meditating on the near lineage is like a stack of high buildings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
