Alas! Having obtained a human body without Dharma is like going to the Golden Island and returning empty-handed. When one falls into evil realms, will one not regret it? Convey these words to those who have no faith.' The above is stated. Meditating on Impermanence of Death: Second, meditating on the impermanence of death includes: after birth, death is certain; the time of death is uncertain; there are many causes of death; and contemplating death will not be in vain. First, contemplating that death is certain after birth: from the moment of birth, one runs towards the Lord of Death without a moment's rest. As the venerable one said: 'At the moment of birth, the crow of death appears, there is no time, hurry up, Dingriwa!' For example, like livestock being led to the slaughterhouse, each step brings them closer to death. Jetsun said: 'This life is impermanent, like the shadow of the sun, the further it goes, the closer it comes, escape is futile.' He also said: 'Years beat down like rain, days and nights drip like water, the house of the illusory body is about to collapse, the footsteps of death are getting closer.' Furthermore, since all things born from causes and conditions cannot remain for two moments and will perish, all conditioned phenomena are said to be impermanent. The Hero said: 'Thus, for all who are born, what awaits them is death.' Contemplating that the time of death is uncertain: Among sentient beings, there is no fixed order of who dies first and who dies later. Just as those who originally hoped not to die suddenly fall down and die, such things can also happen to oneself. Jetsun said: 'You young men and women gather together, do you not think you will die? Death will come like a sudden fall.' Not only that, but no one can guarantee that they will not suddenly be possessed by demons tonight, or fall off a cliff, or be crushed under a collapse, or die from illness or weapons. Since it is not certain that one will not die tonight, yet one plans to do this today, do that tomorrow, and do that later, etc., arranging future plans and accumulations is completely deceiving oneself. As Gyalsé Thogmé Sangpo said: 'Even whether one will die today cannot be determined, yet one always plans to live long, at the time of death, one is flustered and suffers greatly. Please receive the blessings of remembering death!' The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: 'It is not appropriate to live comfortably, thinking that one will not die today.' The Letter to a Friend says: 'This will be done tomorrow, this will be done later, this is the arrival of the Lord of Death, it will definitely be unreasonable.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When people think of 'Nideu Re' (Tibetan: ནི་དེའུ་རེ་, the god of death), Yama (Lord of Death) holds a club, watches with a scrutinizing gaze, his eyes red with anger, and gives what seems like an unsatisfied smile. It is said that this shows that there are many causes of death: the lives of sentient beings exist amidst various harms, like a bubble of water blown by the wind, and even if it has not disappeared yet, it has no power to last long, so it is not reliable. As Nagarjuna said: 'This life is full of harm, like a bubble in the wind, more impermanent than a water bubble. It is a great wonder to have the chance to wake up from breathing in and out while sleeping.' Furthermore, the end of birth is death, meeting will eventually lead to separation, accumulation will eventually be exhausted, and construction will eventually collapse, so one should contemplate that everything is meaningless. When a severe illness occurs and breathing is about to stop, wealth is useless, as are intelligence, beautiful appearance, courage, power, land, and relatives. One can only leave alone, naked and empty-handed, remembering the fears of the bardo (intermediate state), not knowing where one will go in the next life, having made mistakes by clinging to what is useless. At that time, from the happy king to the cruel executioner, everyone will have strong regrets, and one should contemplate this. Therefore, one should strive to practice the sacred Dharma, as it is said in the scriptures: 'If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, you should abandon everything to extinguish it. To strive for a deathless rebirth, one should be more diligent than this, there is nothing else more important.' One must contemplate death in any case, because there is no place to escape death. As the hero said: 'On earth or in heaven, is there anyone born who has not died? Have you seen, heard, or doubted this?' Also: 'The great five-powered sages, who can fly long distances in the sky, cannot go to a place where there is no death.' Even the solid Mount Meru will be reduced to ashes, and the vast ocean will dry up, so why wouldn't the fragile bodies of sentient beings perish? As it is said in the scriptures: 'When the earth is burned, Mount Meru collapses into ashes, and the water of the ocean also dries up, what need is there to mention sentient beings?' If you still think you will not die, then why won't you die? From the hair on your head to the soles of your feet, carefully examine your body, where is it not fragile and weak?
