I take refuge in the Guru! I take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme among those free from desire! I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme among assemblies! Venerable one, please allow me to observe the upavāsa (fasting vows) from today until sunrise tomorrow. When reciting the third time 'observing the upavāsa', the precepts of the upavāsa will arise. Because I will become a student, please allow the teacher to let me hold it. Keep this in mind and repeat after the third time. The third time is completed. The teacher says: 'This is the method.' The student says: 'Good.' You have well obtained the precepts of the upavāsa. It is not enough to just obtain them, you must also protect them. The way to protect them is, just as the Arhats abandon the eight things to be abandoned with body, speech, and mind, and do not return to them in their minds, so too, I will learn to abandon them.' After saying this, have the student repeat. Teacher, please listen. Just as those noble Arhats, for as long as they live, abandon killing and turn away from killing, so too, I, by the name of (so and so), will abandon killing and turn away from killing. Through this first limb, I will follow, practice, and emulate the teachings of those noble Arhats. Furthermore, just as those noble Arhats, for as long as they live, abandon taking what is not given, unchaste conduct, false speech, intoxicating drinks made from grain and cooked substances, which are places of heedlessness, as well as singing, dancing, musical sounds, garlands, perfumes, ornaments, and colors, high beds and large beds, and untimely food, and turn away from untimely food, so too, I, by the name of (so and so), from this time until sunrise tomorrow, will abandon taking what is not given, unchaste conduct, false speech, intoxicating drinks made from grain and cooked substances, which are places of heedlessness, as well as singing, dancing, musical sounds, garlands, perfumes, ornaments, and colors, high beds and large beds, and untimely food, and turn away from untimely food. Through this eighth limb, I will follow, practice, and emulate the teachings of those noble Arhats. 'This is the method.' (The student says:) 'Good.' This should be said. This should be done every month until the end of life. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the scriptures that speak of observing Uposatha (fasting) on the eighth or fifteenth days, it is said that it should be taken from an individual each day. However, Jowo (Lord Atisha) said that from this day forward, until the end of life, he would observe Uposatha on the eighth and fifteenth days of every month, and on empty days (the first and fifteenth days of the Tibetan lunar month). When reciting the vows, he would also add 'from this time forward, until the end of life, on the empty days of every month, I will abstain from killing,' and so on. The benefits of observing Uposatha in this way are: The Maitreya (Loving-Kindness) Prophecy Sutra says: 'On the fourteenth and fifteenth, and on the eighth day of each month, in the month of miracles (referring to the first month of the Tibetan calendar), with the eight branches (referring to the eight precepts of Uposatha) well observed, practicing Uposatha, he comes to my teachings.' This meaning will be widely proclaimed.' Indra (Hundredfold) said: 'If one observes the eight-branched Uposatha on the eighth day of the waxing moon and in the month of miracles, that one will become like me and similar to me.' The Bhagavan (Blessed One) said: 'Kausika! Do not say that! If one observes the eight-branched Uposatha on the eighth day of the waxing moon and in the month of miracles, that one will become like me and similar to me.' Thus, the rituals of the Vinaya (discipline) are complete. The Ritual for Taking Uposatha by Oneself The Ritual for Taking Uposatha by Oneself. Homage to the Bhagavan (Blessed One) Amoghapāśa (Infallible Noose). Just as the Tathagatas (Thus-Gone Ones), Arhats (Foe Destroyers), Samyaksaṃbuddhas (Perfectly Awakened Buddhas) of the past, like a tamed horse, like a great elephant, having done what should be done, having accomplished what should be accomplished, having laid down the burden, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted the bonds of existence, with minds completely liberated by the right teachings. For the benefit of all sentient beings, to liberate them, to eliminate famine, and to perfect the qualities conducive to enlightenment, in the same way, I, named so-and-so, will also certainly take Uposatha before the sun rises tomorrow. Thereafter, I will not kill, I will not steal, I will not engage in sexual activity, I will not lie. Because many faults are associated with drinking alcohol, I will completely abstain from alcohol. I will not sit or lie on high and large beds, and similarly, I will not eat untimely food, I will not use perfumes, I will not wear garlands, I will not adorn myself, I will not sing or dance. Just as the Arhats always, do not commit killing and so on, in the same way, I will not kill and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
