Wishing to benefit, the Teacher, the Sugata (Well-Gone), the Protector, the standard indicated by the words 'the Teacher' must also be understood by relying on the universally accepted standard. Firstly, wishing to show its classification, it says: 'The standard is unfailing knowledge.' Later, it says: 'If the ultimate own-nature is not known, the clarifier of the meaning will also not be.' Thus, the Teacher teaches. If one thinks that there is a fault because the general characteristic of the standard has not been shown, it is not appropriate to show it, because those two minds are very different in the aspect of their objects. Therefore, it is said: 'Because the aspects of the objects are different, the discriminations of the minds are different.' The words 'wishing to benefit' and so on, show the uncommon path of the Great Vehicle, and from within that, they teach by holding the tradition of the great chariot of the profound view. By 'discriminating with scripture and reasoning' and so on, one realizes that in the ultimate sense, all things are without self-nature, and that samsara and nirvana are not two. By 'in many ways, with many methods' and so on, one contemplates that in the conventional sense, things are merely illusion, and thus one possesses wisdom and great compassion, and without abandoning samsara or taking nirvana, one practices the ten perfections for the sake of sentient beings, and thereby accomplishes the complete benefit of oneself and others. Entering through the door of the four truths in reverse order is the path of the Hearers (Śrāvakayāna), and incidentally, the path of the Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhayāna), which is slightly superior with a little more liberation. First, because it is easy to see the aggregates of taking up with defilements as the basis of various kinds of suffering, one first realizes the truth of suffering. Then, by examining the cause of suffering, one recognizes that karma and afflictions are the cause, and realizes the truth of the origin. Then, one recognizes that being separated from the five aggregates by abandoning karma and afflictions is happiness, and realizes the truth of cessation. Then, one recognizes that the method for attaining cessation is the Noble Path, such as right view, and realizes the truth of the path. Thus, both defiled and undefiled are merely cause and effect, and by seeing that there is no agent or enjoyer, one realizes the selflessness of the person. The Solitary Realizer, seeing the faults of samsara, such as old age and death, examines what they arise from, and recognizes that their cause is birth. Similarly, by tracing back to the root, one realizes that the root is ignorance, and thus realizes the dependent origination in accordance with the order of cause and effect. Ignorance is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
