The Thirty-Seven Factors of Enlightenment: Now, to briefly explain the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment (Tibetan: བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་ཆོས, Sanskrit: bodhipakṣa dharma) in terms of their aim, essence, assistance, method of cultivation, and result. The Four Mindfulnesses (Tibetan: དྲན་པ་ཉེར་བཞག): Observing the four—body, feeling, mind, and phenomena—with wisdom, along with the mindfulness that does not forget the object and its aspects. From the perspective of conventional truth, contemplate the impurity of the body, the suffering of feelings, the impermanence of the mind, and the absence of self in phenomena. Or, from the perspective of ultimate truth, contemplate that all phenomena are without inherent existence. Through such practice, one temporarily abandons distorted views, enters the Four Noble Truths, and ultimately becomes free from contaminated bodies and so on. The Four Right Exertions (Tibetan: ཡང་དག་སྤོང་བ་): Focusing on the four aspects of unwholesome and wholesome qualities, both arisen and unarisen, and engaging in effort to adopt and abandon them. The practice associated with diligence includes: abandoning unwholesome qualities that have arisen, preventing unwholesome qualities that have not arisen, increasing wholesome qualities that have arisen, and generating wholesome qualities that have not arisen. By cultivating through intention, effort, diligence, exertion, holding the mind, and abiding, one diminishes and does not manifest unfavorable factors, while increasing and attaining favorable factors. The Four Supports of Miraculous Power (Tibetan: རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་གྱི་རྐང་པ་): Respectfully applying desire, effort, mind, and investigation to the activities of accomplishing samadhi (Tibetan: ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་, Sanskrit: samādhi), such as emanation and transformation. By cultivating samadhi with eight branches that abandon the five faults, one can manifest miracles and other desired abilities. The Five Faculties (Tibetan: དབང་པོ་ལྔ་): The five—faith, etc.—focusing on the Four Noble Truths and being in accordance with them. With faith, one believes in the truths; with diligence, one rejoices in realizing the truths; with mindfulness, one does not forget the object and its aspects; with samadhi, one achieves one-pointedness; and with wisdom, one thoroughly distinguishes impermanence and so on. Through such practice, the path of seeing is quickly generated, and subsequent realizations arise. Because one has power over the realization of truth, it is called a faculty. The Five Powers (Tibetan: སྟོབས་ལྔ་): Faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom are called powers because they cannot be overwhelmed by opposing factors; otherwise, they are similar to the five faculties. The Seven Branches of Enlightenment (Tibetan: བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཡན་ལག་བདུན་): The seven branches of enlightenment, such as mindfulness, focusing on the Four Noble Truths as they are, and being in accordance with them. For example, with mindfulness focusing on the truth of suffering, one seeks to be separated from it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abiding in aspiration (Tibetan: ར་འདོད་པ་, literal meaning: desire), realizing cessation (Tibetan: འགོག་པ་མངོན་དུ་བྱེད་པ་), and dwelling in the state of complete transformation by abandoning afflictions through the path, thereby abandoning what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing. Among these, mindfulness is a limb of the place, as it prevents the decline of virtuous dharmas. Discrimination of dharma (Tibetan: ཆོས་རབ་རྣམ་འབྱེད་) is a limb of self-nature, because the Bodhi of the path of seeing is the nature of wisdom. Diligence is a limb of definite emergence, as it enables the practitioner to go as far as what is to be gone. Joy is a limb of benefit, as it satisfies the mind-stream. The remaining three are limbs of non-affliction. Among these, pliancy (Tibetan: ཤིན་སྦྱངས་) refers to the state of not being defiled by afflictions, as it destroys the cause of afflictions—bad places. Samadhi (Tibetan: ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་) refers to the place where there are no afflictions, as abiding in samadhi transforms the place. Equanimity (Tibetan: བཏང་སྙོམས་) is a limb of the nature of complete non-affliction, as it is free from sinking and excitement, and therefore is not completely afflicted. The Noble Eightfold Path is the same as before in terms of object, companion, and method of practice, but differs in nature. Right View (Tibetan: ཡང་དག་པའི་ལྟ་བ་) is a limb of complete determination, as it ascertains the suchness realized in samadhi. Right Thought (Tibetan: རྟོག་པ་) is a limb of making others understand, as it elicits all speech that demonstrates the meaning of what has been realized. Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood are three limbs of making others believe, as they sequentially clarify pure views by answering others' questions, clarify pure discipline through perfect conduct, and clarify pure livelihood by abandoning wrong livelihood and enjoying as the Tathagata has allowed, thereby making others believe. Effort is a limb of abandoning the obscuration of afflictions, as it abandons the remaining latent afflictions. Mindfulness is a limb of subduing near afflictions, as it does not forget the object of calm abiding and insight, and does not give opportunities to sinking, excitement, etc. Samadhi is a limb of subduing the obscuration of special qualities, as it manifestly accomplishes qualities such as clairvoyance. The fruit is the abandonment of what is to be abandoned by the path of meditation, and the generation of qualities. The eight charnel grounds refer to the purity of the eight apertures of the body, with the two nostrils of one's own body combined into one, etc. The path of feces is the fierce and violent charnel ground, full of thorns. The two nostrils are... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
