Being skilled in all empowerment activities, one is able to fulfill the wishes of the disciples according to their inclinations. The teacher who does not possess such qualities and should not be relied upon is described in the 'Self-Arisen Tantra': 'Ignorant and greatly arrogant, foolishly following words, not contemplating the meaning of secret mantras, harboring resentment by cutting off others' kindness, entering the wrong path, not having seen the face of the empowerment mandala, having become corrupt in vows, not being able to answer questions, having little learning but great arrogance, a teacher who has not been examined is the demon of the disciples.' Therefore, for those who possess discernment, the way to rely on a qualified lama is: like a life-saving medicine, like the heart in one's belly, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, cherish them inseparably, serve them in whatever way pleases them, and accomplish it with body, speech, mind, and whatever wealth one possesses. As the 'Self-Arisen Tantra' says: 'Thus, to the teacher of instructions, serve with one's own body and precious substances, and with things that are extremely rare.' And, with unwavering faith, with gentleness free from stinginess, with offerings free from miserliness, with service free from hesitation, with honesty free from deceit, with a mind free from concealment, with wisdom free from ignorance, and with eight pure intentions free from defilement, offer them completely to the holy one.' The benefits of serving the lama are described in the same text: 'Therefore, offering to a thousand Buddhas for a thousand eons is not equal to applying a single drop of sandalwood to each pore of the lama's skin.' And, as the 'Vajra Tent Tantra' says: 'Because it is called Vajrasattva, the form of the teacher is held in the same way.' Thus, one obtains immeasurable benefits. The qualities of a disciple who is a suitable vessel for receiving instructions are: the text says, 'First, the vessel should be: a person with complete faculties who has faith in the Dharma, great wisdom and diligence, pure vows and diligence in practice, generosity and non-attachment, good renunciation and perseverance in suffering, faith in the supreme Dharma and the ability to keep secrets, a mountain-like stable faith and an ocean-like overflowing reverence.' Those who are the opposite of these should not be revealed even in the direction of the wind.' And, the Great Tantra of Awareness

Also from Rangshar: 'Great strength of faith and diligence, great wisdom and no attachment, great respect and practice of secret mantra, no distraction in the non-conceptual mind, possessing vows and diligent in practice.' That is to say, having joy and longing for the lama and profound teachings, and unwavering faith that is not stolen by circumstances, engaging in practice with unrelaxed diligence, without hypocrisy, abiding in the vows that purify the Dharma and one's own mind, being generous for the sake of the Dharma and the lama, not fearing the view, meditation, and conduct of the profound secret of the unsurpassed Dharma, and with the sharp wisdom to understand its meaning, being skilled in what to take and leave and able to keep secrets, this is a disciple endowed with qualities. Conversely, a flawed vessel, Rangshar says: 'Not showing respect or diligence, practicing secret mantra promiscuously, without lineage or patience, becoming small in wisdom, despising kindness, being promiscuous without meaning,' and so on. To such a person, it is not appropriate to teach profound teachings. From Klongsal: 'Furthermore, if this nectar of the essence of the heart is poured into non-vessels, the vessel will be destroyed and the essence will be lost, and one will fall into hell.' The instruction on the place: The place is a snow mountain, an empty valley, a mountaintop, a charnel ground, and so on. It should be taught and practiced in a place that is very clear, secluded, and spacious. Thus it is said. From Klongsal: 'A snow mountain, an empty valley, a mountaintop, or a charnel ground, in a place that is extremely secluded, clear, and high, is a place for fortunate individuals to practice.' Therefore, a snow mountain clarifies awareness, an empty valley increases virtuous practice, a mountaintop clarifies knowledge, a charnel ground gives rise to renunciation, an extremely secluded place makes one feel happy and joyful, and a clear and high place clarifies the awareness of the expanse. Furthermore, one should rely on a place that is auspicious and blessed, where earth and water are harmonious, without the path of many people and noise, without the fear of thieves and enemies, and where meditation naturally increases. Regarding the time, from Klongsal: 'The end of summer and the beginning of autumn, and the small winter and spring seasons, these two seasons are said to be the best.' That is to say, the external time is the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, and the small winter month or the spring when peach blossoms bloom, the internal
