Ordinary sentient beings never spontaneously realize it, because the emptiness of mind is luminous. As a dharma, when that subtle mind expands into the gross, it abandons the subtle state and becomes gross. When contracting inward, the gross ceases and the subtle arises, so these two do not exist simultaneously. Both of these are the nature of mind-consciousness, and because they are established in the state of contracting inward and expanding outward, they do not exist at the same time. If the subtle mind always exists without interruption, then when the gross mind exists in the continuum of sentient beings, there will be two different kinds of mind-consciousness. In that case, it would be the nature of mind and mental factors, and it would not be like the alaya-consciousness, where the object and image are not interrupted, but the mind-consciousness has its own specific object and image. Just as one can distinguish between conceptual and non-conceptual ways of grasping, how can such a mind-consciousness that is different from the gross mind not be experienced by the self-awareness of sentient beings? If so, is this subtle mind stained by afflictions such as attachment, or is it unstained? If it is stained, then meditating on it will not be an antidote to the two obscurations of afflictions, etc. Haven't all the sutras and tantras said that whatever the nature of mind is, it can never be afflicted by adventitious stains? Furthermore, the subtle mind is the characteristic of the absence of the gross mind, and the gross is the characteristic of the absence of the subtle, so they are completely incompatible. If you admit that these two are one, then the subtle mind will also become gross, and the gross mind will also become subtle, because these two exist without difference in one thing. The distinction that the gross mind is not the original mind, but the subtle mind is the original mind, also becomes meaningless. In the five states of mindlessness, is the subtle mind interrupted or uninterrupted? If it is interrupted, then how is it the original mind? If it is uninterrupted, then there will be conceptual thinking, etc. even in the state of mindlessness, just as your subtle mind can analyze emptiness, why wouldn't others have conceptual thinking? Intellectual subsequent inference does not go beyond the wisdom of conceptualization, and ordinary people cultivate emptiness by inferring selflessness from reasons such as oneness and otherness, not by directly seeing it, you are not...

Do you think so? If the thought of such speculation never ceases, then why is there no speculation during deep sleep and other times? If there is speculation, why is it not a coarse consciousness? Furthermore, if you believe that the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness) continuously exists from the beginningless to the end of samsara, then will it become the basis for imputing "I"? If the alaya-vijnana, which is asserted by the Sutras of the Mind-Only school and the great chariot Thogme (Asanga), is even denied as a term, then what is the difference between the subtle mind, which is not mentioned in either Sutra or Tantra and exists as a continuous stream of moments, and the basis for imputing the "I" of a person? It is necessary to state what kind of scriptural authority establishes that, and what kind of reasoning. The innate mind of Tantra is the self-arisen wisdom that transcends the eight aggregates of consciousness, as stated in the Essence of Wisdom, a compilation of all [Tantras]. Moreover, in the Sutras and commentaries, there are countless scriptural authorities stating that the "luminous mind" is the nature of mind, the self-arisen wisdom, and not the mind as a subject. In short, the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra says: "Mind is not mind; the nature of mind is luminous." The Ornament of the Sutras says: "Another mind other than the nature of reality is not luminous; it is spoken of as self-nature." The Uttaratantra Shastra says: "Whatever is the luminous nature of mind is immutable like space; desires, etc., arising from unreal thoughts, do not become afflicted by sudden stains." Even this much is enough to understand, so I will not elaborate further. Like this, regarding the assertion of the innate mind, which is not mentioned in either Sutra or Tantra, is this considered to be the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature), or is it not considered to be the Tathagatagarbha? If it is, then the Tathagatagarbha is the Dharmadhatu (realm of reality), and if the venerable Nagarjuna says in the Praise of Dharmadhatu, how can this mere part of dharma be the Dharmadhatu of all dharmas? The venerable Maitreya says that the Tathagatagarbha is "immutable" and "follows all dharmas," so please explain how this conditioned subtle mind is immutable and how it follows all dharmas. Furthermore, the alaya-vijnana holds all the habitual tendencies of everything that appears as places, things, and bodies, so it is said to hold all habitual tendencies, but the alaya-
