Ah! The duration of beings' interactions is longer than the flow of water. Friends who are crooked and lured by desires, no matter how affectionate, will eventually become enemies. Upright people even gods will be pleased and descend. Upright people will go to the abode of the gods. Upright actions have far-reaching effects. Upright people are worthy of being the rulers of the country. The virtue of being upright is the most excellent virtue among virtues, the essence of pure humanity. What is the use of praising it more? Whatever one has promised, keep the vow firm and unchanging. If the vow is firm, one's own goals will be achieved. Others should heed his words. Having promised after careful consideration, one should not abandon it even at the end of an eon. The fear caused by breaking a vow is no less than the punishment of the law. Those who do not value words and oaths are like husks without essence. This alone is enough to make an accurate judgment. For such people, fortune and auspiciousness, like withered trees, will move elsewhere, and there is no need to have any doubt about it. The more firm a vow is, the more trustworthy it is. The more trustworthy it is, the more gods and auspiciousness will abide. The words spoken by noble people, even if they are insignificant, are difficult to change. So how can one believe the words of those who break their vows even when they are of great importance? For the lowly, what is lost is life; similarly, for the noble, what is lost is the vow. When the lowly break their vows, the noble are greatly surprised. The noble are willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of their vows, while the lowly, even if they are surprised, do not think that keeping a vow is anything great. Abandoning the qualities of the lowly and always abiding in the qualities of the noble, keeping vows is the greatest adornment in the world. If someone thinks, "This person will help me in this way," then knowing gratitude is a symbol of noble behavior. Those who do not know the kindness given and the harm done, and do not think of repaying, therefore, who, except for the noble ones, would care about these kindnesses and harms? Those who repay kindness and harm in reverse, even if they are considered human, are actually demons. Why imitate their behavior? And who would want to approach them? Noble and virtuous beings, even if they receive small kindnesses, will give great rewards. Having such virtues, they will also possess other great virtues. For those who do not know gratitude,

Likewise, how are the qualities such as the wisdom of the inseparable pair, shame, caution, and honesty? It is said that the glorious protector abides in the person who knows kindness and repays it. This person is beautiful because they embody qualities other than these. Constantly striving to benefit others is the cause of one's own perfection. Power and wealth are vast, arising from this and residing in this. Those who strive greatly for their own benefit, even if they are leaders at first, will gradually become inferior, like water flowing down a steep mountain cliff. Those who wholeheartedly benefit others, even if they are servants at first, will gradually rise higher, like a turquoise dragon soaring in the sky. Foolish people are attached to their own interests and seek only their own benefit. Their own interests are not accomplished at all, or if they are, it is difficult to accomplish them greatly. Wise people, even if they are attached to their own interests, prioritize the interests of others. By the power of seeking the benefit of others, their own benefit is extremely perfect. If you want to achieve your own benefit greatly in this life and the next, benefiting others is the excellent method. This method is also the path of the sons of the Gyalwa (Victorious Ones). To have faith in the qualities of those worthy of refuge, in the true nature and its distinctions, and in the infallible cause and effect of taking and abandoning, is called belief. Faith is the root of the Dharma, increasing the accumulation of merit. Those with merit naturally possess all virtuous conduct. Faith casts away all decline. Faith is a wish-fulfilling jewel, accomplishing whatever is thought. The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the three unfailing refuges. Always have faith and respect for the immeasurable qualities of those refuges. The fruits of black and white karma will ripen without fail. Therefore, if you love yourself, carefully examine the taking and abandoning of karma and its effects. This is the land of karma, and the other shore is the land of fruition. Therefore, in this time when you have autonomy, plant seeds of virtue. Look at the happiness and suffering of various beings. The cause of this is karma, as the truthful one has said well. Who would not think about karma and its effects? Faith in the Three Jewels and the Four Truths, if attained, is the supreme attainment. Alas, the fruit of excellent merit! Even though I possess enjoyments.
