There are nine states, namely: Three handcuffed gait. The gait of iron shackles. "Messenger submissive" means acceptable. Submissive gait. Well-defined raised gait. Small, slow gait. She-wolf running gait. Musical rhythm gait. Sparrow flying gait. Complete gait and nine types. The first of these, the handcuff gait, is: Like horses that do not walk fast when three legs are shackled. Those who are vehicles of gods and humans have not seen the view of unborn equality. With the thought of good wishes, the strict precepts such as the ten virtues are bound like handcuffs. There is no autonomy for indulgent and profound views and practices, and it is similar to this. Retaining the vehicle of gods and humans is the first type. The second type, the iron gait, is: The horse's two hands are bound by iron shackles, which is faster than the handcuff gait, but the hands are bound, and there is no freedom to walk. Those who only see the selflessness of individuals, the Hearers' Vehicle, are superior to the mere vehicle of gods and humans. However, because they have not seen the meaning of the Great Vehicle, they do not have the autonomy to roam freely from the gate of equality. Instead, they are heavily subdued, bound like iron shackles, which is the suffering of not being able to quickly reach the Buddha's land. Third, the messenger's submissive gait is: The horse's legs are not bound, and it walks slowly by itself, which is faster than the former, but weaker than the previous gaits. The Pratyekabuddha Vehicle is superior to the Hearers' Vehicle in terms of realizing the selflessness of form, and in the last life, by the power of previous habits, without relying on a spiritual friend, they understand the meaning of dependent origination by themselves and can manifest the fruit of self-realization. However, because they have not seen the meaning of the Great Vehicle's equality and have little skillful wisdom, they cannot quickly reach the ultimate ground, which is similar to the horse's gait. Fourth, the well-defined raised gait is: Like a horse that walks slightly faster with its head raised, those who understand the meaning of the Great Vehicle's Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom, after realizing the two selflessnesses, although they have certainty about ultimate equality, still need to practice for countless kalpas, which is better than the Lesser Vehicle.
