Appearances. The distinctions of meaning are explained in four ways. The sutra explains the necessity of mentioning seven. First, here, when explaining seeming perception, the Pramana Sutra says: Error and conventional knowledge, as well as inference arising from inference, memory and desire are called, seeming perception with cataracts, etc. Thus, it explains six conceptualizations and one non-conceptualization, totaling seven. Error consciousness is like mistaking a mirage for water. Conventional knowledge is all conceptualization that attaches names, categories, etc., to the object seen. Inference is the mind that grasps the sign. What arises from inference is the mind that grasps the sign-possessor. Memory is conceptualization of the past. Conceptualization of the future is called desire. These six are conceptualizations. Blurred vision, etc., are actual seeming perceptions that arise from the deterioration of the dependent sense faculty, such as the clear appearance of non-existence. These are also summarized into four types here. Error consciousness is called the consciousness that imputes meaning to something else. Conventional knowledge is called the consciousness that relies on convention. The other four are called the consciousness with hidden meaning, thus there are three types of conceptual consciousness. Non-conceptual error consciousness is called the consciousness that arises from the corruption of the basis, thus there is one that is non-conceptual. This is because those objects appear due to the corruption of the dependent sense faculty by the cause of error. Second, it is necessary to explain the six conceptualizations, and it is necessary to explain one non-conceptualization. First, the actual need and its justification. First, one might wonder why conceptualization is shown in seeming perception. In order to establish that it is not a perception arising from the senses, the two, error consciousness and conventional knowledge, are separated and explained. If one thinks that no one would consider these two not to be perceptions, that is not the case, because one sees these two errors as perceptions. Then, why explain the latter four? Although the four, inference, etc., have already been established as conceptualizations, they are mentioned here to show that the former two are also conceptualizations. This is also shown from the perspective that the first two depend on signs and the latter two do not depend on signs. Second, explaining the reason for error, and understanding it from examples.

Homage. Firstly, conceptualizations that are symbol-dependent and those that attach things to other things are the cause of mistaking sensory consciousness for autonomous awareness in some cases where the distinction between conceptual and non-conceptual is not clear, because they are related to manifest seeing and close engagement, i.e., having a close co-participatory nature. For example, when seeing a mirage that is blue and moving, composed of elements, one thinks it is water because it resembles water seen before, and mentally attaches other things as water. Therefore, logical people argue that the consciousness arising from the contact of the senses with objects should not be named, thus excluding cases like the double moon. Since this cannot prevent mistaking a mirage for water, it is excluded at the edge of the definition by "clinging to the nature of being without illusion," thus considering illusory consciousness to be sense-generated. Furthermore, when seeing a vase, outsiders argue that the cognition that combines the vase itself, actions such as lifting, and attributes such as blue, with aspects of distinction such as "this is it," exists in the manifest, and that the universal exists in the realm of the manifest. Similarly, they believe that cognition that combines meaning and name, such as thinking "this is the taste of the seed" and "this is the cause of the fruit," exists in the manifest through rough and continuous cognition. Secondly, just as the self-nature of what is to be measured becomes a hidden object, the four conceptualizations of memory and so forth, including desire, inference, and its result, do not grasp the self-nature of things that have become the realm of the manifest, because they have a state of relying on symbols to grasp their own objects. Therefore, without the memory of previously experienced symbols and their meanings, there would be no understanding of the universality and attributes of vases and so on, nor would there be an understanding of mirages as water. Therefore, this will also become a conceptualization and will completely disappear from the manifest. The second part: Explaining the intention of the sutras and one's own view, refuting the views of other commentators. Firstly, in this occasion of explaining the manifest, the fourth non-conceptual illusory consciousness is special, namely, "manifest like illusion, accompanied by blurriness," which means that it appears as clear as the manifest, but because there is no object, it relies on the manifest valid cognition to manifest.
