The consciousness that possesses an object, in what way does it cognize the object? To cognize in that way is the nature of things. Therefore, although the appearances are different, they are not different in the same way, which becomes the cause of the consciousness that cognizes the same category. Like the sense consciousness of the pot-grasping that possesses an object, although the individual characteristics have different objects, they are the same in the object of the pot as the former, so it becomes the cause of the arising of the consciousness that cognizes the pot-grasping consciousness as the same category, which is the nature of things, as explained in detail before. Therefore, the fruitlessness of that meaning, is not that, is separated from the different, or is merely the elimination of others, is universally followed by all differences, but there is no single common thing that follows everything. The elimination of others exists in the appearing things, therefore, the one hearing that exists in common in things is the boundary of the elimination of others, which ultimately belongs to it. If the elimination of others of things is touched, then the sound will express the self-character. If so, then the previously said image of discrimination is expressed by the sound, and the said self-character is not expressed, then it becomes meaningless. Thus, the self-character of the external object can function, although there is no direct touch to the meaning of cutting off the non-self-character, the expressing sound seems to be related to the image of discrimination that appears as the expressed. The discriminating appearance is mixed with the ultimate destination of the elimination of others of the self-character, and the relationship arises due to the power of attachment, therefore, the sound knows the self-character, because it ultimately belongs to the elimination of others of meaning, so hearing or sound is to make the expressed thing eliminate others, or to show the elimination of others of meaning. Second, if appearance and discrimination are separated, then it is not real; if appearance and discrimination are mixed, then it can be expressed. First, things like pots are different from all others by their own nature, therefore, when it is seen, it also appears as a unique self-nature. As the appearance appears, it exists in the object of discrimination, so it is named by the name of the pot, after the name and meaning are mixed and accustomed, how is the difference of the thing itself, the cause of the sound of the pot also makes the knowledge produce external

Any image that appears as having a bulging belly, although not the unique characteristic of the thing itself, the appearance of consciousness mistakenly takes it to be the thing itself. Such an appearance arises from the habit of previously experiencing similar things. Similarly, concepts such as the chief, etc., arise from the mind's speculation on experiencing other feelings such as happiness, as previously stated. Therefore, if some of our own schools believe that, in the ultimate sense, sound can be expressed, and that only the appearance of consciousness can be expressed by hearing the word "vase," then what unique characteristic of the bulging thing can be understood through it? If only the inner substance of consciousness is taken as the object of expression, then when the word "vase" is spoken, it will not be mistaken for a single appearance, but only understood as an appearance of consciousness. In this way, one would only express one's own inner experience, and would not be involved in taking external objects such as water containers. If the external vase cannot be understood by its name, then the symbols specifically set up to understand the external thing become meaningless, because the intention to be expressed can never be understood. If it is understood through illusion, then it is not an object of expression in the ultimate sense, but only a worldly convention. Therefore, the mere understanding of things through these sounds is confirmed by worldly experience. When asked what aspects of the external thing the expressing sound wants to express, it should be answered that it only expresses the distinction between that thing and what is not that thing. The unique characteristics of things, the categories that follow them, and the unique characteristics of consciousness are not suitable as objects of expression, because the expressing sound can only be understood as excluding what is not that thing. That is, the sound of a vase shows the opposite of the vase by excluding what is not a vase, and the exclusion of what is not a vase exists in things. Therefore, taking the unique characteristic as an object of expression due to attachment ultimately comes down to this key to distinction. Analyzing in this way, if only external things or internal appearances of consciousness are each taken as objects of expression, then the correspondence between symbol and meaning cannot be established. Apart from these two, a third party as an object of expression is also impossible. Therefore, it can be said that the word "tree" expresses the exclusion of what is different from non-trees, that is, things have the characteristic of excluding what is not that thing.
