Objection. Having thus objected, there are two aspects: debate and refutation. The first has two parts: a brief statement and a detailed explanation. First, the Vaibhashikas and others say: "If the universal substance exists in those appearances, then it should also be common to many different appearances, i.e., one sound applies." If so, what is meant by the universal existing in multiple appearances? Is it that the universal depends on the appearances, like a tree in a container? Or is it that the universal is expressed by the appearances, like a lamp illuminating a vase? In either case, it is not reasonable for the universal. The second is the detailed explanation, which has two parts: refuting dependence and refuting appearance. First, why should the universal not depend on appearances? Because it is believed that the universal is permanent, so it cannot be helped by other things, therefore it is not dependence. Even without help, dependence is not contradictory, just as a tree does not arise from a container, but it depends on it. The tree depends on the container, but it is not that it does not provide help, because if the container does not hold it, then the tree and water, etc., which have the nature of falling downwards, will not fall, and the container, etc., as the dependent thing, can produce its place. If the container does not hold it, the tree, etc., will fall and drift elsewhere, then the place of dependence, i.e., the aspect of non-common existence, is produced by the dependent thing, because the tree, etc., in its previous place of existence, is fixed there by the dependent thing, so unlike the tree existing elsewhere, the difference in the nature of staying there is produced by the dependent thing. If this difference is not produced, then it will not be called "this depends on this." Holding the position of the place is that the dependent thing has produced a difference that did not exist before for the dependent. If no difference that did not exist before is produced, then even if it does not depend, it will stay there, or even if it depends, it will not help, but will drift elsewhere. Therefore, the container provides help to water, etc., or produces other differences, but it does not produce nothing. In this way, the ability of the dependent thing to help the dependent is impossible for the permanent universal, because the permanent thing cannot produce any difference that did not exist before, if the appearing thing does not depend on it, it will drift elsewhere, and it makes it not drift elsewhere.

It is impossible for any of the abilities of etc. to apply to that general aspect. Even if no new distinctions are created, if it is said that the already self-established general aspect is made to abide or exist in that place because it is clear, then even without clarity, that general aspect is already established, and because it is always in that way, it is not at all the case that it is made to abide or exist in that place by relying on clarity, because the general aspect is permanent and cannot be transferred to different places, nor can it be made to exist there by others. In this way, not only does it not exist by relying on clarity, but it is also unreasonable to say that the general aspect exists. The reason is that by analyzing whether the general aspect and existence are different or not different, the statement that the general aspect exists is itself unreasonable. If the general aspect and existence are different, then the general aspect will never exist, and even if it is made to exist through clarity, the general aspect will not become existent. If the general aspect and existence are one, then it exists by itself and does not need to rely on clarity. Secondly, refuting the assertion that the illuminator is the support of the illuminated: For the permanent, an illuminator is never reasonable. If it is asserted that the illuminated is a class, then it is too extreme. The previously non-existent illumination is not pervaded by class. First, those who say that the possessor of the general is the illuminator of the general say: Just as a lamp illuminates a vase in a dark room, but the lamp does not benefit the vase, so even if the general of a cow is illuminated by relying on the cow, there is no need to benefit the general. If you say so, then, the image of the vase in a dark room, for the consciousness that focuses on itself, was previously unable to arise, but later can arise, that is, for the purpose of being able to produce the function, the lamp etc. exist as the face of other illuminators, that is, before it gathers with it, it cannot produce its own result, eye consciousness, like waiting for it, relying on it, and whatever is its other-dependent is called the illuminated. Because it possesses lamplight etc., it makes it possible to produce its own grasping consciousness, therefore, the illuminator is also considered to be the cause of that special illuminated object, otherwise it is unreasonable. Otherwise, if this illuminated object, even before it gathers with the illuminator, remains in the nature of being able to produce its own consciousness, then it is impossible to rely on that illuminator in any way, because the causes have gathered. In this way, the illuminator illuminates the illuminated object through the way of benefiting it, then, in different times before and after, for those without other differences,
