Some say that expressing reverence to Manjushri with the two kinds of splendor means paying homage, but in reality, it is paying homage to the wisdom body of all Tathagatas who have attained the ultimate in abandonment and realization. In any case, there is no contradiction. The second point is that nowadays, most ordinary people who claim to be scholars of both internal and external subjects are attached to one-sided doctrines and evil deeds, and their hearts are filled with arrogance and prejudice, lacking the wisdom to deeply understand. Therefore, not only do they not value the well-spoken words of profound meaning such as the Compendium of Valid Cognition, but they also hate these profound well-spoken words and those who hold them because of jealousy. Therefore, Dharmakirti believes that this treatise will not be of any help to those with such shortcomings. So, why write? Because one's own mind has long been accustomed to and close to these well-spoken words, and in order to cultivate this habit, one likes or is happy to write such a treatise. That is to say, most people do not have impartial minds because they are attached to their own sects and hate other sects, lack the wisdom to understand deeply, and do not value well-spoken words. For these reasons, even if it does not help those with shortcomings, on the contrary, those who are impartial, wise, and pursue the truth are called "vessels of listeners." Just as the scriptures say, doing so is to avoid slandering well-spoken words such as the Compendium of Valid Cognition, and to eliminate great harm, so it is written out of compassion. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Whoever follows the footsteps of the noble ones, he is endowed with splendor and immaculate wisdom. The foolish wise men of the world do not understand his pure words. If they slander him slightly out of ignorance, they will be born in vain and without benefit, so out of compassion, I will clarify his reasoning here." Just as the scriptures say. Second, regarding the content of the treatise to be written, it is divided into two parts: the branch of understanding what to take and abandon for oneself, and the branch of following for others. The first is divided into: the inference of measuring the hidden object to be measured.

And, the direct perception प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition) that measures the manifest is explained. First, the general लक्षण (lakṣaṇa, characteristic) of reason that realizes the hidden is explained. Establishing the showing of the main meaning and the teachings as प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition). First, the aspects of the sign are shown in brief, and the three correct आधार (ādhāra, basis) are stated in detail. The reason and relationship that determine the sign are explained. First, the sign is established as a property of the पक्ष (pakṣa, subject), and it is certain that it pervades the probandum, that is, the property of the subject is established and the pervasion is certain. Possessing the three aspects is a correct reason, thus the लक्षण (lakṣaṇa, characteristic) of reason is shown. Then, how many correct reasons are there? It is said that it is included in the three types of effect, nature, and non-observation. The reason why it becomes a reason is that if the probandum does not exist, then the sign will not arise, because it is determined by प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition). The opposite, the seeming reason, is the opposite of the relationship of "if it does not exist, it will not arise", that is, other than not possessing the three aspects. Thus it is said. Among them, what is the first of the three aspects, "property of the subject"? In general, the word "subject" refers to the meaning of the collection of dharma, that is, the subject, and the dharma of impermanence, such as the subject who wants to know impermanence, which is generally known as a real name. One aspect of it, only the subject, and only the probandum, are also used as assumed names, such as one aspect of the cloth is torn, it is said that the cloth is torn, just like using the name of the whole for one aspect. Moreover, the name of "subject" is also used in similar and dissimilar classes, but here, the "subject" related to the word "dharma" among the three aspects refers to the subject itself, just as the word "having hands" is commonly known to refer to an elephant. Therefore, the sign, such as "made", should be understood as being established on the basis of the subject or the sound of the subject, or as being established in its dharma. Here, the word "subject" must be understood as the meaning of collection, and if it is understood as only the subject, then there will be unreasonable clinging. In general, the subject of a single syllogism should be understood as being distinguished by the probandum, and wanting to know it, therefore it is nothing other than the meaning of collection. However, the property of the subject in the case of the three aspects is to examine whether the sign is established only on the subject. After it is established, the probandum and the sign will have concomitance and opposition.
