“Ah, I am in love with you,” she thought. Yet, being of upright and pure nature, she said: “Excellent, excellent!” To eat at an unappointed time without auspicious occasion—where did such food come from? The woman said: “The deity revealed to me that you will be my husband.” So she adorned herself in finery. The Brahmin thought to himself: “Alas, merit is exhausted, for even in my wife’s dreams, the gods show such signs.” He ate, bathed, and went to sleep. The two conversed affectionately, asking each other of virtue and passion. Then the wife asked: “Did you obtain something?” He replied: “A little.” She used coded words: “What is this called here?” He said: “The big ear hears.” Soon the Brahmin acquired five hundred gold pieces. The wife, if not showing him, would hide them. The Brahmin said: “Wealth may be secured, why conceal it?” She replied: “I am your half-body, why should I hide?” The Brahmin took the wealth outside the city. The wife asked again: “Where should the big ear be placed?” He answered: “Dig at the foot of the nyagrodha tree (banyan tree) in the cemetery and place it there.” The wife then coaxed: “Husband, rest a while, do not tire yourself.” The Brahmin slept. The wife secretly told the Big Ear: “What you heard, take it quickly.” The Big Ear wrapped in a light cloak, slipped out, went to the cemetery, retrieved the buried wealth, and brought it back to the Brahmin’s house. The next day, the Brahmin went again to the cemetery, but the treasure was gone; he struck his chest and returned home. The wife and relatives asked: “What ill has occurred?” He narrated everything. Some went to a great physician, skilled in reasoning, to inquire. The physician said: “If it can be recovered, it is only by chance—there is no other refuge in the world.” The wife dressed neatly, went to the physician, first offering auspicious words, then explained how her husband lost the wealth. The physician remained silent for a while, then asked: “Brahmin, where did you put the wealth? When did you put it there? Did anyone see? Did you tell anyone?”

The servant replied. The great physician thought: This Brahmin woman is surely one who, by her very nature, is inclined toward passion for another. The Brahmin woman, gasping for breath, said: “Do not despise me. If I cannot obtain that man, I shall offer my wealth to you.” She further asked: “Do you have a dog in your household?” The Brahmin replied: “Yes.” She said: “Go now to my house, and when you return in good will, I shall pledge before the king to provide food for eight Brahmins.” Thus, four of the eight Brahmins would be summoned by him, and four would be invited by the woman. She acted accordingly. The great physician then summoned a man before him and said: “When the Brahmins arrive, you are to stand at the door without doing anything—just remain before them.” He entrusted the task to a simple-minded man, instructing: “When the Brahmins enter, observe carefully: whom the dog bites and whom it ignores—keep in mind the dog’s behavior.” As the woman served food inside, those who gazed at her, laughed, spoke, or associated with her excessively were to be noted. After giving these orders, he let him go. When the Brahmins arrived, the dog attacked. When a man with large earrings entered, the dog lowered its head and tail, followed behind him, entered the house, and made sounds of intimacy. The king’s official saw this and thought: “This man with large ears must be the thief.” As the Brahmin woman served food, she signaled to the man with her brows, laughed lightly, fixed her gaze upon him, and spoke in whispers, lingering especially long near him. The king’s official observed these signs, seized upon them, and reported to the physician: “The matter is indeed thus.” Hearing this, the physician immediately ordered the king’s man to seize the large-eared man and said: “To seize another’s wealth in such a manner—is this the conduct of a Brahmin? Confess and return what you took.” The large-eared man admitted: “It is true. May my sin be appeased, I will not again trespass upon that master.” Then the physician ordered the man imprisoned, declaring: “Such wickedness of flesh and bone must be punished severely, so that fear arises, and the gods will protect me.”
