When someone said: “This pearl has not been taken by others,” jealousy arose because it was spoken in public, and the goddess praised the king’s virtues, not knowing that she thereby exposed the fault of the ‘Knower of Footprints.’ The king asked: “What is that fault?” Reply: “Because when declaring in public, you yourself brought upon another the reputation of a thief who steals wealth at night, and thus made that name clear before the gods, that is all.” Then the king, in order to expose the great fault of the ‘Knower of Footprints,’ caused the woman’s precious pearl to appear before himself and accepted it, then circled the royal city three times and buried it under the lion throne of his palace. When the woman awoke, stricken with grief at the loss of the pearl, she appealed to the king. Thereupon the king publicly declared and said to the ‘Knower of Footprints’: “If this pearl of great value has been lost, who has taken it?” The ‘Knower of Footprints’ then went out again, circled the royal city three times, returned to the palace, looked under the lion throne, saw what the king had done, and laughed repeatedly. The king asked: “Why are you laughing?” The ‘Knower of Footprints’ answered: “Great King, the thief who took the pearl is not an ordinary man.” The king said: “Then speak.” The ‘Knower of Footprints’ replied: “Great King, it is like when the Blessed One said: farmers and others work the land, and when the land is plowed, trees and plants arise, and all beings live by that land—yet today the land would say: ‘I have been trampled by you.’ It is just like that.” Having said this, he was silent. The king said: “Speak more clearly.” He replied: “If I am to explain more clearly, I will give another example. When the Brahmins offer fire sacrifices, the flame in their hands might say: ‘Alas! Though I am daily poured with ghee, worshipped and saluted with reverence, now you burn me.’ Then to whom could beings take refuge?” Having said this, he again fell silent. The king said: “I still do not fully understand your words. Please explain in a clearer way.” The ‘Knower of Footprints’ replied: “Great King, if…”

Through training they became skilled, and each day they prepared the necessary instruments of dance and offered them to her. At that time, the king commanded the leader: ‘You should begin the performance of dance and song together.’ Thus the leader, taking the instruments of dance, together with the peerlessly beautiful maiden, began a solemn performance of song and dance before the king and the great assembly in the royal palace. There, the peerless maiden, with her captivating form and graceful gestures, danced and charmed all hearts; all people’s minds were seized and they longed to meet her. Then, a son of an ascetic, weary and discouraged from his austere practices and turning his mind toward household pleasures, thought to return home. Hearing the sound of drums, he came as if to watch a spectacle, and beheld the peerless maiden’s graceful dance and heard her melodious song. His heart was seized, and he thought: ‘Such beauty cannot be seen in the forest; it is fitting that I abandon my place of austerity.’ At that time, he saw the maiden’s upper garment slip, revealing her two full breasts, and realized that desire was aroused. The peerless one then said: ‘If one entrusts the mind firmly to the Dharma for long, who would commit sin for the sake of hell? As a lamp dispels darkness at night, those who have deviated from the path will not surely perish.’ With such eloquent speech, like a teacher instructing disciples, she turned them away from the evil path. Then the leader exclaimed, ‘Excellent!’ and gave his own upper garment to her. The son of the ascetic also praised her words, and before the peerless one, laid a seat adorned with tree leaves and covered with the black skin of a Sala deer. Then, two merchants offered pure white garments like the moon, and ministers and princes also each offered garments like the moon. When the dance performance was complete, the king first asked the leader: ‘Why did you adorn this peerless maiden with clothes?’ The leader replied: ‘Please, O King, because of her beauty and qualities I felt devotion, and because her good words dispelled the darkness of my mind, I offered this garment.’ Then the king asked a sage’s son…
