When asked to translate, the Bhagavan said: In the past, there was a Tathagata named 'Invincible by Others' who appeared in the world, performed the deeds of a Buddha, and completely passed beyond sorrow. Afterwards, a royal stupa was built for his relics. At the festival of that stupa, tens of thousands of people gathered, and a monk was teaching the Dharma in the afternoon. At that time, near the king's palace, there was a man named 'Gambler Bankrupt,' who was very addicted to gambling. He had a wife named 'Completely Victorious Woman' and a son named 'Completely Victorious One.' Then, that gambler, except for wearing a single cloth, an umbrella, a pair of shoes, and five betel nuts, had lost everything he owned inside and outside the house in gambling. He was suffering from unbearable poverty and lamented, 'Alas! Not having accumulated merit, poverty is utterly unbearable!' He sighed, put on his shoes, took the five betel nuts and the umbrella, and left the gambling place. Eventually, he happily arrived at the place where the Dharma was being taught, thinking, 'Let me listen to what he is teaching.' So he put down his umbrella and shoes and listened respectfully. After a while, the Dharma speaker recited this verse: Accumulating merit leads to happiness. Therefore, people should do good. They should do it again and again. They should desire it. Having heard this verse, he thought, 'Accumulating merit leads to happiness, that is indeed so. My being so destitute is also because I have not accumulated merit, so I should do some merit.' He thought about what he possessed, and saw that other than the cloth, the umbrella, the shoes, and the five betel nuts, everything else had been lost in gambling. He thought, 'If I give away the betel nuts and the upper garment, I will starve to death. If I don't give them away, I will go to the next world without merit, and there I will also suffer the pain of poverty. So, what is the way to not starve to death and also not be without merit?' He thought again, 'Even if I die of starvation, it is easy, but going to the next world without merit is not right.' So he resolved to give away the betel nuts and the upper garment.

Thinking of giving alms. At that moment, the Dharma speaker recited this verse again: If one is slow to do good deeds, one will clearly delight in doing evil. Therefore, one should quickly do good deeds, and also turn the mind away from sin. So he spoke. Hearing those words, thinking that one should quickly do good deeds, he thought of giving alms in La Gor. On the lion throne, the Dharma speaker sat on it, (they) held an umbrella for him, and placed two shoes at his feet. Those five Pandita guests trampled on (the Dharma speaker's) feet, took off their outer garments and covered the Dharma speaker's feet, expressing faith, and making "hissing" sounds. They prostrated at his feet, and prayed with strong faith: By this merit, aspiration, and giving for the sake of the Dharma, may I never be poor from now on. May I be known for my merit in all lifetimes, and may gods and humans make me a king. May all my thoughts and wishes be fulfilled, and may wonderful omens appear when I am born, possessing inexhaustible treasures and filled with various jewels. After saying these words, the Dharma speaker also recited the dedication, and everyone left. That gambler, wearing only a cloth, thinking about the matter of giving, returned home, and when his wife and son saw him, they said, "This person has lost his outer garments and gambling tools, and we two will also be lost by him, let's go." He felt ashamed, thinking that this was the fault of poverty, so he spoke this verse: What suffering is the most painful? Poverty is the most painful. What is the most, most painful? It is poverty itself. The poor are like the dead. I am not a poor person who died in a mud pit. After saying this, he sighed and sat there without saying a word. After that, there was a well in the courtyard of that house, and the wife, in order to fetch water, tied a bucket with a rope and lowered it into the well, wanting to draw the water up, but she could not lift it. So she called the gambler and said, "Sir, please come and help lift the bucket." The two of them could not lift it either, so they called the son, and all three of them exerted all their strength, even to the point of tearing their skin, and finally lifted the bucket.
