Just as all the waters collected from the four directions of the great ocean have the same salty taste, it is said that this samadhi shows all dharmas to be unborn and the same. This same samadhi is also taught at the end of the seventeenth volume of the Sutra of the Noble and Complete Preservation of the Roots of Virtue. From the Sutra of the Great Lion's Roar Spoken by Maitreya: In the past, immeasurable and countless kalpas ago, after the Tathagata named Star Light appeared in the world and passed into nirvana, there was a bodhisattva named Great Diligence, who was handsome, beautiful, and pleasing to the eye. He was born as a king in that land, of the Brahmin caste, like a son of a great sala tree. At that time, the monks who had entered the Dharma would draw various images of the Tathagata. One of the monks made a well-crafted and perfect image of the Tathagata on a cloth and took it to the palace of the father of the Bodhisattva Great Diligence. When the Bodhisattva Great Diligence saw the image, he thought: If even the image of the Tathagata is so pleasing to the eye, what need is there to mention the Buddha himself? How wonderful it would be if I could have such a body! He felt great joy and faith, and became disinterested in all worldly matters, thinking: If I continue to live at home, I will not be able to achieve such a body. I must renounce my home. Then, Great Diligence, who was sixteen years old and whose faculties were mature, bowed at the feet of his parents and said: Please allow me to be ordained in the teachings of the Tathagata. The parents said: Young man, do not say such things. We have only you, our beloved and precious son. If we do not see you, we will die of longing. The young man said: I will by no means disappoint you, and I will certainly renounce my home. The parents said: Young man, what shall we do? The young man said: From now on, until I...

Until it becomes real, I will neither seek myself, nor seek meditation, nor enter sleep. I will not smear myself with ghee and oil residue, nor will I speak any words about good and non-good. Then, that child sat in a place where garbage was not discarded, without saying a word, and did not eat for a day. Then, the parents took food with a hundred flavors, and day and night they only begged him to eat, but he did not say even a word. Similarly, he did not eat for two days, and about five hundred relatives of his mother took food with a hundred flavors, and day and night they begged him, but he did not even look at their faces, let alone speak. Thus, he did not eat for three days, and five hundred relatives of his father begged him as before, but it was still the same as before. He did not eat for four days, and his five hundred attendants begged him, also as above. He did not eat for five days, and his parents, in their own palace that had become very huge, placed all the treasures such as guests, gold, jewels, pearls, and lapis lazuli, as well as all kinds of clothes and ornaments, in one place. They also summoned eighty-four thousand young women who were like young goddesses, adorned with all kinds of ornaments, and placed them in one place. In short, all the enjoyments that could be enjoyed in the king's palace were placed before him. His parents, as well as all the five hundred relatives of his mother from before, and those eighty-four thousand young women, and most of the people, took food with a hundred flavors, and day and night they said to that young man, "Young man, get up and eat! Stay in this house and also give alms! Also do good deeds! Enjoy happiness, play, and pleasure with these women once! Do not completely abandon a palace like this!" They also said this. There, the great Bodhisattva, with great diligence, neither looked at nor spoke to those gathered there, and sat like that, not eating for six days.

While he was fasting, he abandoned all other intentions except for remembering the Buddha, and he did not even generate the thought of food. His parents, relatives, those women, and those crowds of people, all shed tears, cried out loudly, wailed, and knelt at the feet of that Bodhisattva, but he did not even look at their faces. At that time, a god who resided in that royal palace, sitting in the sky above with great miraculous power, spoke in verses to those ordinary people: Those who strive for enlightenment, they are like Mount Sumeru, their strength is firm, extremely unshakeable, and they will not abandon their vows. Even if all the lands were to shake, and fire were to turn into water, it is possible. Friends, no one can move him from this place. Do not be displeased with him, and do not do so in the future. Do not commit sinful deeds. Otherwise, you will wander like the blind for millions of kalpas. This one dwells in enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, and those who strive for manifestation, it is not difficult to attain supreme enlightenment. Do not practice the conduct of enlightenment for the sake of desire and enjoyment, but for those sentient beings who seek the wisdom of the Buddha, how can they be happy? Even if the three thousand worlds were filled with jewels, filled with clothes and other celestial objects from other lands, one cannot generate attachment to them. For the sinful deeds done out of ignorance, confess them. The wise, having confessed their faults, will not abide in the same karma again. Thus, at the urging of that god, the parents, relatives, and other people of that Bodhisattva confessed their sins and said to the young man: Young man, go as you have thought! Strive well! Also eat some food! If you do not eat, you will face death. They advised him in this way. At that time, although that Bodhisattva had already fasted for seven days, because he remembered the Buddha, for seven days the gods filled his body with radiance, his senses did not change, and the radiance of his face did not diminish. Thus, that Bodhisattva fasted for seven days, disregarding the dwelling of the household, and the kingdom.
