The intermediate ones do not know how to speak human language. The great physician took the dog home and tied it to a stake not far from the bed. When the great physician's food was served, seeing him eating all kinds of food, the dog could not accept it. Then he gave it a little bit of bad things, and it became weak and emaciated, almost dying. The king ordered, "Bring those dogs here and see if they have learned human language." The other people's dogs were unable to learn to speak. Seeing that the great physician's dog was thin and weak, he asked, "Why is this so thin?" The great physician said, "Just as the deity eats and enjoys, so has this dog been given." The dog said, "This deity is false, I am so hungry that my stomach has shrunk." Then the great physician reported, "This is how I made it speak human language." The king was very pleased to hear this. Later, on another occasion, wanting to test their abilities, he gave each of the five hundred ministers a sheep, and ordered, "You must give these sheep delicious food, so that they grow without being greasy, but have strength." The five hundred ministers, because they were not good at raising them, raised those sheep very fat. The great physician put delicious food in front of the sheep, and made a small wolf shape out of wood, and put it in front of the sheep. The sheep was frightened when it saw it, so it did not grow fat, but became very strong. Looking at all the other sheep, they were all bright in color and fat, but only the great physician's sheep, although not fat, looked very strong. The king was very happy and praised, "This man is very clever." Later, on another occasion, wanting to test who was more clever, the sons of the five hundred ministers gathered in the garden, eating and sitting. When talking about who had strange and wonderful things, and what strange things each had in their homes, each spoke of the various things they had heard and had in their homes. There, someone asked the great physician's son, and he said, "In my house there is a stone, which serves as the cornerstone of a pillar. If it is placed on the water, it will float, rub, knead, etc. with each other. No one else has such a thing." The others said they had never heard of or seen such a thing, saying it was impossible, and fined him five hundred gold coins. That young man

He said that he had thus defeated his father, the great physician. The great physician said, "Do not show the son," and even though they came, he did not show him, but gave five hundred gold coins as a reward for the victory. Then, the great physician caught the monkeys and taught them to play music. He said to his son, "Now go among them and talk as before, asking whose house has anything wonderful. You should say that my house has monkeys that play music and are skilled in singing and dancing." But the others did not hear it. He said, "If I show it, what will you give? Give a thousand gold coins. If I cannot show it, then you must return a thousand gold coins to me." He took the monkeys and went to the king's palace. In front of the king, the monkeys beat drums and sang and danced, and the others gave a thousand gold coins. The king thought it was wonderful. After that, the king, ministers, and all the people thought that the great physician was learned and unparalleled, and they respected him. Then, there was a Brahmin in that place who married a wife of equal status, and she gave birth to a daughter with a beautiful appearance. That Brahmin thought to himself, "If there is someone who has mastered logic and the eighteen sciences, who is intelligent, who learns from me and becomes like me, I will give this daughter to him." So he made a vow. He named that daughter Udumbarika. Another Brahmin's son, whose color and appearance were ugly, who had all eighteen bad signs, and whose name was also Bad Appearance, was not allowed to study by his father, but he himself went to that Brahmin and studied. Before long, he learned everything that the Brahmin knew. That Brahmin teacher thought, "Although this person's appearance is ugly, he has learned everything from me, so I cannot fail to keep the vow I made before. I should give him the daughter." So he adorned the daughter with all kinds of ornaments and gave her to the ugly Brahmin's son. The son accepted her, but he did not dare to enjoy happiness with her. He thought, "I will go to my own house and enjoy happiness." So he took her away. Udumbarika also thought, "I have a beautiful appearance, but to be with such an ugly husband is a shame." However, he still took her away, and on the way, they ran out of provisions.
