Since the realm of individual self-awareness experienced by the noble ones transcends the scope of earth, mind, and consciousness, and cannot be experienced by outsiders and others, it is said that way. If one merely follows the literal meaning of the sutras and empties the philosophical tenets of their meaning, how can one explain the definitive meaning of the sutras and tantras? All sutras are words of authority, and no matter how one thinks through them, one cannot ascertain the realm of non-elaborate individual self-awareness, and it will become provisional, which is too extreme. Therefore, those who cling to the words "free from extremes," "non-elaborate," "inexpressible," and "inconceivable" are clinging to freedom from extremes and clinging to non-elaboration. This is like looking at the finger itself when pointing at the moon with a finger, and it becomes a subtle clinging. The sutra says, "In the context of contemplating suchness, Maitreya, these are the subtle signs: the sign of the selflessness of the person, or the sign of the selflessness of phenomena," and so on. Like this, even when subtle signs arise, one should temporarily let go of the mind and remain equanimous, let alone gross signs. Also, as it says in the Sutra of Brahma's Special Question, "Son of the gods, the more one imputes to the naturally completely pure nature, the more the mind is afflicted." Just like that. Therefore, one should understand that, as it says in the Lankavatara Sutra, one must use the lamp of the sound of imputed words to ascertain the realm of individual self-awareness, which is not the object of words. Even from the ground of an ordinary being, one should merely accord with non-conceptual wisdom; if not, it will be like the quotations from Longchen Rabjam's commentary on the Vajra Heart Sutra, etc., cited earlier. Even so, whether or not one can enter into such profound meaning is varied, which is undeniable. This depends on the extent of accumulating merit in the past, whether or not one has previously engaged in study and contemplation, whether one's faculties are sharp or dull, and whether or not one has been grasped by the instructions of a virtuous spiritual friend. The sutra says, "Bhagavan, beings who have entered this teaching of the Bhagavan, which is characterized by the single taste of ultimate truth, also find it difficult to realize in this way, let alone the outsiders who come after this?"
