They live on the wealth accumulated through asceticism, but are deluded by the insignificant perfections of this life, and spend their time in vain. These beings, sometimes by the power of merit, repeatedly come to various worlds of the happy realms and heavens, enjoy sensual pleasures, but die from the fruit of sin and fall into the long and unbearable sufferings of the three lower realms. In the uncertain cycle of high and low, happiness and suffering, they wander and drift through successive lives. In such cycles, there are extremely many cliffs and abysses of perverted delusion, desire, and attachment. In samsara, with the attitude of self-view, clinging to the inverted dharma, thinking things are real, this nature that is not the true nature, because of mutually contradictory causes, one cannot see the true nature in samsara, as if appearing in the darkness. In samsara, which is devoid of the appearance of reality, the ocean of incomparable and unbearable suffering exists as its nature, without beginning or end in time and direction. There, Beings are overwhelmed by the powerful forces of karmic actions and afflictions of samsara, and the power to do good is weak. The basis for doing good—the leisure and endowment body—is also short-lived. Even if they stay there for a while, in order to live long, they must perform various services for the body, and in order to be free from illness, they must rely on medicine, etc., and endure hunger, fatigue, sleep, various internal and external harms, and meaningless activities such as associating with children, and life passes quickly and meaninglessly. It is extremely difficult to obtain the cause of liberation from samsara—discriminating reality with wisdom. In the place of samsara, the habit of distraction rushes like a rapid river, and where is the method to suddenly stop it? Moreover, there, in order to fall into the lower realms, the black forces such as the sons of gods and demons strive hard, and there are many wrong paths such as eternalism and nihilism. It is difficult to overcome doubt, because the definite understanding that "this is the correct and unerring path" cannot arise, and it is difficult to distinguish the goal and form. The internal and external conditions for cutting off doubt are difficult to find.

Because it is difficult, and if one dies without finding the appearance of the correct Dharma in this way, it is very difficult to obtain leisure again. It is also difficult for the Buddha to appear in the world, and to diligently practice his teachings, thereby obtaining the opportunity to abandon the stream of afflictions in one's own continuum. Alas, suffering will be passed on from one to another! Although it is so extremely painful, one does not see oneself drowning in suffering, but is attached to existence, and one should feel sorrow for these beings who dwell in the stream of suffering. For example, if one sees someone repeatedly bathing in order to desire a cool touch, and repeatedly entering the fire in order to desire warmth, alternating between the two, one would think: Alas, this person is pitiable! Like this, although dwelling in extreme suffering, those who are led by craving, thinking themselves to be happy, relaxing their minds as if aging and death will not come, and living with the behavior of enjoying themselves, will first be killed by the irreversible and merciless Lord of Death, and then will suffer the unbearable suffering of falling into the lower realms. Like this, because they are separated from seeing the meaning of suchness, for those who are tormented by the fire of worldly suffering, when will I be able to pacify their suffering with the collection of all desired things, such as food, clothing, shelter, etc., which are the means of happiness or possessions that have perfectly arisen from the clouds of immeasurable merit? Thinking this is temporary happiness. And, from the point of view of ultimate benefit, when will I be able to accumulate limitless accumulations of merit with reverence and great joy, in order to benefit sentient beings in a way that is free from the fixation on the three spheres, and realize for myself the suchness of all phenomena, and then, for those sentient beings who have fallen into the place of samsara merely under the sway of the fixation on reality, in order to counteract them, proclaim emptiness, which teaches that all phenomena are without object of reference? How wonderful it would be if I could proclaim it! One should make this aspiration and generate great compassion. If one can realize that all phenomena are without inherent existence, then for those sentient beings who are dominated by the fixation on reality and wander in samsara, great compassion that never abandons them will naturally arise, and a mind like the one spoken of here will arise.
