There are also gradual occurrences, such as water and grass. As it is said: "Vast wisdom is like a flowing river. If the near cause for one wave to arise exists, then one wave will arise. If the near cause for two or three, or many waves to arise exists, then many waves will also arise, and the river's water flow will not be cut off, nor will it completely disappear, just like that. Vast wisdom, like the abode of that river, the ālaya-vijñāna (藏文:ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་,梵文天城体:आलयविज्ञान,梵文罗马拟音:ālayavijñāna,汉语字面意思:阿赖耶识), constantly relies and abides, and if the near cause for only the eye-consciousness to arise exists, then only the eye-consciousness will arise. If the near cause for two or three or five consciousnesses to arise exists, then between two or three or five will arise." Just like that it is said. Similarly, the consciousness of taking is profound and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. If one clings to it as self, that is not right, these I have not told to children. Thus it is said. The objects of the consciousnesses are each determined, but they are not the immediately preceding condition, all consciousnesses arise, and if they encounter an object that can serve as the immediately preceding condition for all consciousnesses, then from one immediately preceding condition, two or more consciousnesses arise, and there will be no contradiction. The arising of mind-consciousness is: always together with eye-consciousness or not, it also arises. Except for those in the state of non-perception, and the two kinds of non-perception and cessation samāpatti, and the five instances of deep unconscious sleep and fainting, it arises constantly. Thus it is said. After unconsciousness, how does the mind cease and then arise again? It arises from the ālaya-vijñāna These three that have become consciousness are, as it is said: "Unreal conceptualization is, mind and mental factors, the three realms." Just like that, it is not conceptual thought, but in the manner of superimposition, the mind and mental factors of the three realms, in what way does it distinguish the vessel, self, aggregates, elements, etc.? Those do not exist in its nature, therefore, consciousness is like dreams, illusions, gandharva cities, dizziness, etc., there are no different objects.

It also occurs in this way. Therefore, when the previous consciousness ceases, a consciousness of the same kind arises from that consciousness. All phenomena of the three realms and the unconditioned are established as mere consciousness. The consciousness that can generate all the seeds of all phenomena is the Alaya consciousness. The self-power known by the eyes, etc., enters for the sake of nourishment, which makes the power of the Alaya special. Because the eye consciousness arises from the Alaya consciousness, due to the mutual power, such a conceptual thought, the one below it, changes into another state in this way. Therefore, such and such conceptual thoughts of forms, etc., arise. From the mind of virtue, non-virtue, and immovability, the future body of karma, the habit of manifest accomplishment, is held by the taker and the holder, the habit of the previous life, having matured in this life, is exhausted, and then, the future Alaya fruition of the next life arises in this way. Moreover, clinging more to the grasped object other than consciousness is the clinging to the grasped object. That which is known and held by consciousness is the clinging to the holder. The seeds of the future grasped object and the clinging to the holder of that kind, which are measured by the previously arising grasped object and the clinging to the holder, are the habits of the two clingings. The different bodies of different beings are connected by the distinction of the habits of karma, just like sprouts from different seeds. The habits of the two clingings, those who generate the body, become co-operators, like water for sprouts. Thus, there is no other fruition other than the Alaya consciousness. Apart from the eye consciousness, etc., there is the Alaya consciousness, and it is the seed of all, how is this established? The scripture is the Buddha's teaching, from the Abhidharma: "The realm of beginningless time is the basis of all phenomena, because of this, all beings and Nirvana are attained." Thus it is said. Reasoning is also, if there is no Alaya consciousness, then entering into and reversing from samsara is also impossible. Entering into samsara is the connection of similar continuities, and reversing is the Nirvana with remainder and the Nirvana without remainder. Apart from the Alaya consciousness, it is also impossible for consciousness to arise from the causes of action. If there is no consciousness from the causes of action, then
