Commentary on the Thirty Verses Commentary on the Thirty Verses Commentary on the Thirty Verses, Homage! In Sanskrit: Trimshika Karika. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Thirty Verses. Homage to youthful Manjushri! In order to eliminate the obstacles on the path to liberation and omniscience—self-grasping, in order to show the two types of selflessness, and in order to understand the tenets of the Mind-Only school, this treatise is composed. Furthermore, it is also to refute the two extreme views of considering the knowable as real like consciousness, and considering consciousness as conventionally existent but not ultimately existent like the knowable. Therefore, all that is established as self and phenomena does not exist as an external object apart from the mind, because what is established as self and what is closely taken as phenomena, the various ones, that is, self and life and the one who is born, etc., are established as self, and the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, etc., are established as phenomena, where do these arise from? All of these are what have become consciousness, there is nothing other than that. "Become" means that the moment of the cause ceasing and the moment of the result being obtained are simultaneous. Because the habit of the conceptual thought of self and phenomena has increased, the alaya consciousness appears as self and phenomena. Although these do not exist in external objects, due to the power of beginningless habituation, they are established as self and phenomena as if they exist. Thus, these are not other than mind, but are completely imputed as if they exist. Even so, if there is no basis for close taking, establishment is impossible, therefore there exists an object that has become consciousness in the external object, this is what Buddhadatta said. All knowables are completely imputed, therefore there are no objects. Consciousness is dependent arising, therefore it is acknowledged as real. It is indicated by the word that consciousness has become dependent arising. "Become" also refers to the three aspects that are established there in the apprehended aspect of the mind where there is no self and phenomena in the external object, what are the three? The alaya-vipaka and the defiled mind that intends there, and the discriminating of objects, that is, the six consciousnesses. Among them, the first alaya consciousness is, as the nature of the cause and effect of all phenomena, it exists and is related, therefore it is the alaya. It is also matured from previous seeds and all

It is the seed of afflictions or all dharmas, that is, the maturation of karma in all realms, destinies, birthplaces, and lineages. If the alaya consciousness is, then what is the object? What is the aspect? The alaya consciousness is the place where the habit of distinguishing self and dharma is taken. Although there is a habit of distinguishing, it is only experienced and not known. Because of the undifferentiated object of inner and outer objects, the aspect is very subtle. Although the object aspect is directed towards the vast place, sentient beings, and the vessel world, because there is no distinction, it is a very subtle aspect that cannot be perceived. With what retinue is it associated? It is always associated with contact, attention, feeling (i.e., sensation), perception, and thought, and is inseparable from the five omnipresent factors. Among them, the feeling of the alaya is neutral, because the aspect is completely undifferentiated. The alaya consciousness is not obscured by near afflictions, and it is unlabelled for both good and evil. Its retinue, such as contact, is also the same as the alaya consciousness with the same object aspect. The alaya consciousness flows like a constant stream, moment by moment without interruption. Only when the Arhat who has exhausted the outflows is attained, the alaya consciousness will cease, because all unwholesome things have been abandoned for the alaya consciousness. The alaya consciousness abides in it and arises from it, and clinging to it as self is called afflicted mind. Any consciousness that has the nature of thinking of self is obscured and unlabelled for good and evil. It is constantly associated with the four afflictions, until when? That is, the view of self (destructive view), the ignorance of self (ignorance), the pride of self (the pride of thinking "I am"), and the attachment to self (i.e., the love or craving for self). It is also said: Ignorance and the view of self, pride and love of self, these four make the alaya consciousness become the afflicted mind, which is the nature of thinking of self, and is also the cause of inversion. This mind is afflicted, the mind is good, and when it is unlabelled, it is always the cause of clinging to self. This is from the explanation of the Commentary on the Steadfast Mind. It is the seed of whatever realm it is born in among the three realms. Apart from these four, the five omnipresent factors such as contact are also equally possessed, so it is associated with nine retinues. These are also the seeds of whatever realm they are born in. It is Arhat who has eliminated all afflictions
