Regarding the ascertainment of the three kinds of knowledge, the first has four points: how to cultivate wisdom with its qualities; explaining the reasons why it is difficult to realize; how to dispel confusion through the guru's instructions; and explaining the greatness of the nature of realization. The first point is: being liberated from things like permanence and true existence, and from things that are cut off like throwing away distant objects. Therefore, in the conventional or nominal sense, things that are like illusions and in the ultimate sense, there are no real things, that is, they are fully endowed with the principles of the two truths. The unchanging nature of the mind, which is self-luminous, is the supreme state of liberation in the stages of cause, path, and result. The nature of mind, that is, the wisdom of omniscience, should be completely sought from one's own mind, as it is said, from the state of liberation, whatever it is, with single-pointed meditation, to hold that state of conceptual thought or conceptual mind that arises and ceases uninterruptedly like a wheel. This is the suchness of the nature of inner sentient beings and outer objective things, which is called the name of realization or awareness. Furthermore, in the conventional truth: 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind, and the three times are also only mind.' As it is said, knowing one's own mind is knowing everything. In the ultimate truth: 'One thing is the nature of all things, and all things are the nature of one thing. Whoever sees one thing as it is, also sees all things as they are.' As it is said, therefore this is reasonable. The second point is: the emptiness of things that are neither existent nor non-existent, like the sky, is naturally luminous. In the conventional sense, clinging to existence, and in the ultimate sense, clinging to non-existence, etc., completely abandoning all the objects of characteristics that have objects, this is considered to be the profound state or the ultimate truth. Those non-Buddhists and those who consider themselves Buddhists, who want to be liberated from samsara, have a reversed misconception of its meaning, and they develop strong attachment and great confusion to it, so it is very difficult to realize. The reason for this is: first, just as a child initially investigates things, thinking that they exist.

If that were the case, then each moment would be a continuous cessation at the end of arising and ceasing, remaining in a state of stagnation. If things did not have the nature of cause and effect, then they would arise from emptiness without cause or condition, and thus would be either permanent or non-existent, because they would not depend on cause. Third, for that reason, neither of the two extremes of existence and non-existence should be grasped. To cling to the side of existence and also to cling completely to the side of non-existence is the path to be traversed by the wise and intelligent, a supreme state of Dharma that is profound and extremely subtle. This lies in the oral instructions of one's own virtuous friend or lama, meaning that it must be understood through their instructions. Fourth, whatever exists, all of these arise and cease, and whatever does not exist also has no result, so both of these are unreasonable. Therefore, in the middle of these two, there is no establishment even of a mere middle in conventional terms and ultimately, so the meaning of not abiding in any dharma, which is extremely subtle, is what wise people realize. That alone is the supreme of jewels, as it is said: 'Existence and non-existence are both extremes, purity and impurity are also extremes, therefore completely abandon the two extremes, and the wise do not abide even in the middle.' As it is taught. Second, showing the opposing aspects of that, there are two: showing the fault of viewing as annihilation and the fault of mistaking for reality. First, for the three cases of non-existence, foolish or ignorant people are close to them. The three cases of abiding in non-existence are: the materialists who believe that there is no past or future life, and the Buddhists who believe that there is no non-conceptual wisdom, which is a slander against the result, and those who hold the view that because it is emptiness, there is no harm even if one commits sins, which is a literal interpretation of the Dharma. The first of these is unreasonable because there is no reason to establish it, but there is a reason to refute it, and it will always fall into the fault of existence or non-existence. The second, the absence of wisdom, is unreasonable, for if the cycle of a monk who has exhausted his defilements were completely reversed, why would the perfect Buddhas not create or proclaim it? If they create it, then they will certainly be completely attached to becoming the fault of a view, if
