Explain how to differentiate "of". There are two aspects: explaining the way to understand through concepts; the first aspect is further divided into two points: separately showing the opposite aspects of sound and meaning without confusion; elaborately explaining its own nature with examples. First point: If sound and meaning are measured from their respective opposite aspects, then everything will not be confused, but will be independent of each other. The reason is that what is understood from that name cannot be understood through other names. If it is understood through other names, then it is meaningless to say various names. For example, knowable things, knowledge, mental factors, wisdom, or knowable things, knowledge, consciousness, etc. Knowable things are divided into two types: existent and non-existent. Existent things are matter, elements, change, drum sounds, etc. Knowable non-existent things refer to going from existent to non-existent, abandonment, analysis, cessation, etc., which are also explained by it. Only elements can be determined as knowable, but it is uncertain what matter and non-matter are, etc., all need to be analyzed. Second point: Even so, one name can express acceptance or non-acceptance through another name, thereby expressing various meanings. It can be distinguished and displayed separately according to one's own preferences. For example, through the words knowable, thing, matter, taste, and sweetness, from the first four to the first three of the element particles, etc., from one to four, just as the later words can determine the previous words. Just like saying the word "tree" does not exclude fir. Because the general term does not exclude the individual, it is confusing to express the individual with only the general. If you say "This is a tree", thereby understanding the fir in front of you, etc., then in this case, other trees are excluded. Although a special word like fir does not abandon the general concept of "tree", it excludes fir other than fir, thereby determining the unique fir itself. For example, just as the word "fir" does not abandon the concept of "tree", but abandons other trees. For fir, by distinguishing the differences in orientation and time, thereby understanding the self-character of fir, this is distinguished by one's own intention. Therefore, when it is determined that the nature, etc., is the opposite of the indicator of that thing, the nature and the indicator are established. The indication and meaning are also the same. When there is fir in front of you, simply saying "This is a tree" can express the meaning. If it cannot be understood only through "tree", then it cannot be understood through fir either. Just like the size and orientation of fir cannot be understood differently. Therefore, indication and meaning are distinguished.

Even while rotating. If you say, "Give me that blind deer from this place," it is unnecessary because the self-characteristic of the deer can be understood. It is said this way because one is not skilled in expressions without distinctions. Therefore, if there is a mistaken understanding, it is necessary to add an expression that eliminates the error. If there is no mistaken understanding, that expression is sufficient and does not need to be said. Just as fire is a thing, this is established through meaning. If someone wants something like a permanent fire, then saying "fire of a thing" is meaningful; otherwise, saying it is meaningless. Only I can distinguish these. Second, there are two ways of engaging in thought: establishing one's own view and refuting the views of others. First, regarding the universal that excludes what is not itself: it will be mistaken for a self-characteristic, and thus understood as a self-characteristic. Other than the universal, the self-characteristic itself, there is no sound or thought that directly and nakedly expresses it, because it cannot be done. If it could be done, it would be harmed by the simultaneous occurrence of negation and affirmation, etc. Second, among these: refuting the belief that what is expressed is a universal entity; refuting the belief that there is a real connection between sound and meaning. First, if one examines what is expressed by sound, there is no universal entity that pervades all particulars. Because it contradicts particulars, one, and many, it negates that it is an entity. Regarding the exclusion of non-entities that do not allow examination of one and many: they can be distinguished and entered according to one's own mind, because this is merely an imputation. Second, therefore, the non-Buddhists believe that there is no previously non-existent entity. According to their view, whatever entity there is, it is never separate from non-existence. Therefore, everything necessarily becomes permanent, as it is always existent. Saying "non-existence" and saying "entity" are difference and basis. Although there is no actual connection, it is connected through the mind. Saying "previously non-existent entity" and "entity previously non-existent" are merely different ways of expressing it; in reality, there is no difference. It is impossible for an entity and non-existence to be the same basis. In order to eliminate the entity as previously existent, it has a reverse dependent, that is, with sound. Who can prevent someone who wants to express "previously non-existent entity" with sound? No one can prevent it. Second, the elimination of debate. To those who believe that there is no self, etc., ask: if there is a reason to exclude phenomena other than the self, then, through refuting and excluding itself, it is established that the self exists.
