One should abandon laziness, excessive talking, mental activities involving excessive thinking, and excessive behaviors such as walking and sitting, in order to examine the pulse. By doing so, the three humors (འདུ་བ་རླུང་མཁྲིས་བད་ཀན་,vāta-pitta-kapha,wind-bile-phlegm, wind, bile, phlegm) will not be disturbed, and the pulse will be clear and rhythmic. If this is not done, the pulse will be high and tense when full, and low and weak when hungry. Lack of sleep and excessive talking will disturb the wind, and the pulse will resemble wind disorders. Excessive walking and sitting will also make the pulse erratic. Therefore, avoid these factors and remain calm, so that the natural pulse of the disease can be clearly understood. Now, if one wants to examine the pulse suddenly, the patient should be made to breathe normally. If breathing is not normal due to fatigue or running, the pulse will also be erratic. Therefore, examine the pulse when breathing is not agitated. Rapid or stagnant breathing is a sign of the pulse. It is important not to let breathing affect or alter the pulse, because the tension and relaxation of the pulse are influenced by breathing, which has been proven by experience. Secondly, the time for examination is when the sun shines on the sky and it dawns, but the sunlight has not yet actually reached the ground. At this time, the warm air inside the body has not yet dissipated due to talking, etc., and the cold wind or cold air from outside has not yet entered the body, and the body has not moved or eaten. At this time, when the yin and yang (གདགས་སྲིབས་,gdags sribs, yin and yang) energies are balanced, examine the pulse that is pushed by the breath and beating in its natural state. Yin and yang (གདགས་སྲིབས་,gdags sribs, yin and yang) is a term for day and night. Some say that yang (གདགས་,gdags, yang) represents the deity and the master, and yin (སྲིབས་,sribs, yin) represents the sick person and the patient, yang (གདགས་,gdags, yang) represents the five organs, yin (སྲིབས་,sribs, yin) represents the six bowels, yang (གདགས་,gdags, yang) represents the right pulse, yin (སྲིབས་,sribs, yin) represents the left pulse, yang (གདགས་,gdags, yang) represents the day, and yin (སྲིབས་,sribs, yin) represents the night, like the time between these two, such as dawn. Although there are various explanations, here, yin and yang (གདགས་སྲིབས་,gdags sribs, yin and yang) is a symbol of hot and cold. Vigorous behavior causes heat to flare up in the body, and rapid breathing is hot air, at which time the pulse will also become tense. When the stomach is full or the body is cold, etc., the body becomes cold and breathing weakens, and the pulse should be examined accordingly, and it will become slightly weaker.

This is obvious. Therefore, the patient should remain still, without moving, maintain a proper posture, and keep their breathing balanced in terms of hot and cold. Unless the root cause of the disease is known, the strength or weakness of the pulse cannot be determined solely by breathing. Therefore, this time is the best time to diagnose the pulse. Even if it is not true dawn, diagnosis can be done at any time, but it is not as clear as at dawn. Third, the location for diagnosis: There are two wrinkles on the wrist. From the first wrinkle at the base of the wrist to the distance between the patient's own thumb joint and the junction of the black and white nail cuticle, which is called "cun kou," within this distance, the pulses of the six viscera flow evenly, so diagnosis should be performed here. That is, from the first wrist wrinkle to the end of measuring one cun downwards, it is exactly the protruding bone of the hand. Do not mistakenly understand it as "the side of the bone." Therefore, this one-cun distance between the first wrist wrinkle and the protruding bone is divided into three parts, which in Chinese is called "cun guan chi." When diagnosing with three fingers, the names of the positions are assigned to the three fingers, namely, the index finger is cun, the middle finger is guan, and the ring finger is chi. These fingers should be placed evenly, with consistent size, and then diagnosis should be performed. Past Tibetan doctors said that after measuring one cun downwards from the first wrist wrinkle, the doctor's three fingers should then be placed evenly for diagnosis, but this is inconsistent with scripture and logic. The scripture is: "In China, pulse diagnosis is clearly shown." As the Omniscient Dharma Source (All-Knowing One, Source of Dharma) said in his translation of Chinese pulse classics: "The diagnostic position starts from the wrist wrinkle and goes to the side of the protruding bone." This is very clear. The logic is: If the patient's wrist pulse has a definite area as mentioned earlier, then the qi and blood of the viscera will flow in that definite location. If three fingers are placed arbitrarily below the protruding bone without any certainty, then the key points cannot be grasped. Because the patient's body size is uncertain, and the doctor's finger size is also uncertain, no matter how the diagnosis is done, it is only guessing the pulse of the viscera according to the position of the fingers.
