That which has the form of sound and meaning, the manner of expression is beautiful and pleasing, and possesses the distinction of qualities, is manifestly called poetry. The former translators and scholars used the term "snyan dngags" with the prefix "das" to express the treatises that produce such qualities of speech. Therefore, it is good to make works like the "skyes rabs so bzhi" (Jataka Tales Thirty-Four), which possess the adornment of poetry, into "snyan ngag" (poetry) without the prefix "das." Among them, grammar, which eliminates errors in words, and logic, which eliminates errors in meaning, have also become gateways to other disciplines, but primarily they are the sciences that refute wrong views. Apart from the other four cultures, the art of craftsmanship, which understands the various needs of the world, and medicine, which understands the means of eliminating bodily ailments and accomplishing benefits, these two are mainly sciences that follow other disciplines. Establishing the path to eternal bliss, liberation, and omniscience is inner science, because it understands the reality of all knowable things contained in the two truths. In order not to be confused about all that is knowable, those Bodhisattvas who strive to attain omniscience diligently engage in those five fields of knowledge. As rGyal tshab chen pos (Great Regent) said in the "mDo sde rgyan" (Ornament of the Sutras): "If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, even the noble ones will not attain omniscience. Therefore, in order to refute others, to subdue others, and to know everything oneself, one should strive in them." Furthermore, in the "dGrol ba'i mdo" (Sutra of Gratitude), it is explained separately that one must study the twelve scriptures, hetu-vidya or logic, grammar, medicine, and worldly crafts, and it says: "If a Bodhisattva does not study the five objects of knowledge, then at no time will he attain unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment or omniscient wisdom. Therefore, in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, one should study the five objects of knowledge." The meaning of these earlier and later scriptures is that the noble ones of the Mahayana, such as those who abide in the certainty of non-retrogression, study and strive in the five fields of knowledge.

Therefore, it is only possible to become proficient in all five sciences. It is impossible in any case to be without diligence and proficiency. If they have not studied and diligently researched these five sciences, and have not understood their meaning, then even such exalted noble ones will not attain omniscience, because they have not diligently researched and are not proficient in the five sciences. This is universally true, because all knowledge or that which should be studied is contained within the five sciences, so omniscience without understanding these is impossible in any case. It should be said like this, if it is said that an exalted noble one has not previously studied and diligently researched the five sciences, nor understood them, and is only now beginning new studies, it is very unreasonable, so it is very important to understand this point. There seem to be many doubts to be dispelled here, but because the text would become too long, I will only briefly mention the main points here. Like this, the word "exalted" indicates the Mahayana noble ones, and it is certain that they diligently study the five sciences and are proficient in these sciences, but it should be known that even on the path of non-learning, proficiency in the five sciences will become more and more complete. The branches of the five sciences, the five minor sciences, are: As the Indian scholars said, "Knowing rhetoric, one will not be unfamiliar with poetry; knowing prosody, one will not be unfamiliar with verses; knowing drama, one will not be unfamiliar with languages; knowing lexicography, one will not be unfamiliar with names; knowing astrology, one will not be unfamiliar with numbers." Just as treatises like the Kavyadarsha are considered treatises on rhetoric, if one understands the ten gunas that are ornaments of words and the thirty-five arthalankaras, etc., then one is also skilled in composing captivating poetry. However, if one understands how the ten gunas that are the essence of poetry and the arthalankaras, etc., exist, one will not be unfamiliar with composing pleasing verbal ornaments, so no matter how one says these two situations, there is no contradiction in meaning, just as treatises on grammar or prophecy are called shabda-vidya. That is, poetry, prosody, lexicography, and drama are the branches of shabda-vidya, and prosody and lexicography are also very close to poetry.
