Great! Whatever encompasses all phenomena of appearance and existence into deity, mantra, and dharmata, and is grasped by special skillful means and wisdom, is like relying on the poison one has eaten to eliminate the poison. Such is the power of thought. The nature of the vows themselves is not established apart from those vows themselves. If they were different, then it would have to be asserted that the vows of individual liberation and the bodhisattva vows could not exist in a mantra practitioner, because those three are different. If that is the case, then if it transforms into a higher state, although it has increasing qualities, it is not threefold, because the mantra vow is not those three, but is now only transformed into the mantra vow. If you say that, then I ask you this: If the Hinayana individual liberation is grasped by bodhicitta, does it transform into Mahayana individual liberation or not? If it does not transform, then the mantra vow does not arise in the mindstream of a person who has the individual liberation vow, because those two are different. If the nature does not transform, but they are taken separately by rituals, so they exist without being mixed, then in the mindstream of a person who has both individual liberations, the previous 250 vows of the Hinayana and the later 250 vows of the newly taken Mahayana exist without being mixed, so please explain how 500 vows exist in the mindstream of one person. If it transforms, does it transform after abandoning the Hinayana individual liberation, or does it transform without abandoning it? If it does not abandon it, then it cannot become Mahayana, because the Hinayana individual liberation has not abandoned its own nature, so there is no transformation of nature. If it transforms after abandoning it, then are the previous 250 also abandoned or not abandoned? If it is like the first, then the threefold is impossible. If it is not abandoned, then consider whether the nature is transformed or not. If you ask, how can there be a situation where the natures are not mixed and there is a threefold existence? The answer is that it exists. The 250 precepts that were taken according to the ritual at the time of individual liberation are not lost at the time of the higher level, but exist in a way that is even more superior than before, so what reason is there to say that it should not be called threefold? At the time of Mahayana individual liberation, is there more to protect than the 250 things to be protected of the Hinayana individual liberation? If not, then those two should not be different. If there is, then there are other things to be protected in individual liberation and bodhisattva vows that are not included in the 250, and the lower two are parts of the higher one. Therefore, the higher one does not abandon the vows of the lower one, because it transforms into the basis of the latter. Thus, what is the basis to be protected?

Regarding the distinction based on the methods and wisdom of oneself and others, if the nature of vows is established as Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, then one should ask the holder of approximately two hundred and fifty vows whether he himself belongs to the Mahayana Pratimoksha or the Hinayana Pratimoksha. For example, if the two hundred and fifty Pratimoksha vows are taken by the Bodhisattva vow, and then the Bodhisattva vow is added on top of that, and those two hundred and fifty vows become the vows of the Bodhisattva, then regarding the one who protects all of these Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, should one say that there is only the Bodhisattva vow and no Pratimoksha vow? Please consider carefully. Similarly, it is the same when the Mantra is added on top of that. Here, we are only talking about the nature of the vows that are to be protected, and not saying that the methods or minds that transform it are different. Therefore, since what is to be protected is not without the nature of the previous vows, but is in the manner of one being added on top of the other, with the previous vows not disappearing, in this way, the rituals and the number of things to be protected, etc., the three, Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Mantra, are distinct in their respective contexts, and those that exist do not become mere Mantras, but are completely possessed in the manner of a complete protection of one's own path, without mixing their respective characteristics. For an individual, it can be said that protecting this is the Pratimoksha vow, and protecting this is the Mantra. Therefore, it is the Vajradhara who possesses the three. Even so, the lower two are not independent, but are transformed into the upper one. Now, the second issue is that those who claim that the three, Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Mantra, are distinct, and are not statements with profound meaning, but are self-established, echo the two examples of statements with profound meaning—the sun, moon, and stars, and the water vessel and jewel—but that is only the speech of the wise in certain situations, and their ultimate profound meaning is not like that, because this reasoning will cause harm. That is to say, if the three, Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Mantra, absolutely do not transform from the lower to the upper, but remain in their original state, then for those who possess both Mahayana and Hinayana Pratimoksha vows, it must be accepted that their continuums simultaneously possess the protection that is intended for one's own benefit and the vows that are intended for the benefit of others. Similarly, the Pratimoksha itself, apart from abandoning, does not have the ability to transform or act as a path, therefore the Buddha spoke in that way at that time. Therefore, just as when taming ten fields, there is only one tamer.
