Itself is unborn by its own nature, and 15 neither existent nor nonexistent, nor both nor neither, without attachment to the four extremes, therefore not even attached to mere suchness, illustrated by the example of the large-bodied Garuda. 16 The nature of the union with the seven branches is the self-nature of the wisdom possessing objects, the essence of sixteen aspects devoid of elaboration. Although the three wisdoms do not have a characteristic different from themselves, they can represent as a representation, so they become the four characteristics, so the self-nature is considered as a characteristic. In the extensive sutra, in this chapter showing no going, the world realm shook. Greatly shook, etc., six kinds of changes and eighteen great signs appeared. The six kinds of changes are: shaking, rising, lowering, going up, going down, and the six sounds that follow. These are respectively called shaking, moving, jumping, flashing, disturbing, and clamoring. Each of these is divided into small, medium, and large, and is called eighteen omens or eighteen signs. Thus, all the characteristics add up to ninety-one. Fourth, the part of liberation, has two aspects: essence and division. First, in general, the part of merit is the virtue of not entering the path, and the part of liberation is to tend towards or benefit the liberation from suffering. The virtues of the part of liberation are only born in the continuum, and the combinations mentioned above can be known through the aspect of characteristics, so showing it is especially through the wisdom of realizing emptiness, through realizing that all dharmas are without characteristics, completely grasping generosity and discipline, etc., from the perfections to omniscience, diligently and skillfully practicing the dharma of the path and the dharma of the fruit. In this chapter explaining the realization of all aspects, it is considered to be in accordance with the part of liberation of the Mahayana, or the stage of the accumulation path. In short, being skilled in truly practicing the dharma between the path and the fruit through the gate of no characteristics is the part of liberation or the stage of the accumulation path. Second, there are two types: the division of essence and the division of continuum. First, the sutra showing faith, contemplates the aggregates of the Buddha's discipline, etc., without characteristics, but does not contemplate them as having characteristics, that is,

If it is said that one can attain Buddhahood without touching or harming, then touching falls into the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Harming deviates slightly from the path of the Bodhisattvas. The Sutra of Diligence states that one does not cling to the characteristics of giving, etc. Mindfulness is indicated by having a mind inseparable from Prajnaparamita and skillful means, and having no doubt about Bodhi. Samadhi is indicated by what attains enlightenment, the form of what attains Buddhahood, etc. Wisdom is indicated by the Bodhisattva also realizing all dharmas, and that these dharmas do not exist, etc. The practitioner on the path of accumulation generates excellent faith by not fixating on the support of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and the five uncontaminated aggregates, the three doors of liberation, etc.; diligence that takes giving, etc., as its object of practice; the intention of knowing that benefiting others and Bodhi are without object, and the omniscient wisdom that is drawn forth by the mind of enlightenment, with mindfulness that does not cling to truth; samadhi that does not conceptually elaborate on form, etc.; and wisdom that knows the characteristics of the two truths, both self and general, in all aspects. These five are the faculties with special characteristics. Secondly, the more acute these five, namely faith, etc., of perfect enlightenment, the easier and faster it is for those with sharp or great faculties to realize. Those with small or dull faculties find it difficult to realize. The Sutra states: If one does not fear Prajnaparamita, one will definitely attain Bodhi, etc. Secondly, there are three stages of cultivation in which special application arises in the continuum: the time when special application arises in the continuum; the individual who is the basis for its arising; and the stages of cultivation for that individual. First, the four paths of application are shown in sequence. For those who have generated the continuum of the part of liberation and are enthusiastic about benefiting others, the four, namely warmth, etc., which are conducive to the part of ascertainment, are praised and stated to have all sentient beings as their object of focus in this context. Previously, in the chapter on omniscience, because the emphasis was mainly on the realization of meditative equipoise, the object of focus for warmth, etc., was distinguished by emptiness. Here, because the emphasis is mainly on subsequent attainment, the object of compassion is established as sentient beings. That is to say, after becoming accustomed to emptiness in meditative equipoise, the power of compassion will arise in subsequent attainment.
