Lama. There are two aspects to examine: what causes the attainment and what is the essence. The first aspect has two divisions: general and specific. The first concerns how to attain the first three truths, and the latter concerns two ways of attaining. Firstly, the sutra states, "Having known the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, one obtains faith and attains the precepts pleasing to the noble ones." If it is said that there are four ways of attaining faith through knowledge, then in what state do those who abide on the path to enlightenment attain faith through knowledge, and what is their essence? When one directly sees the first three truths on the path of seeing, those are the Dharma, not the essence of the Buddha and Sangha. Therefore, having known the precepts pleasing to the noble ones and the Dharma, one obtains faith. At that time, one obtains the seven abandonments free from outflows, and because one directly sees the truth, one believes only in the Dharma. Secondly, if one directly realizes the truth of the path, then that path is the Dharma that makes one a learner or a non-learner. Therefore, one also attains faith through knowledge in the Buddha and the Sangha of the Buddha's hearers. Moreover, the word "also" includes attaining faith through knowledge in precepts and Dharma. The precepts are the discipline free from outflows, pleasing and satisfying the noble ones. It is also through directly realizing the truths as they are that one obtains faith. Secondly, specifically explaining the object of faith, the Dharma, is the truth of the path of learners and non-learners. How does one know the Dharma by seeing the first three truths? If one considers only that truth to be the Dharma, then merely seeing the truth of suffering would lead to attaining faith through knowledge of the Dharma. How then is it said to be the three truths? Here, the term Dharma refers to the first three truths, because the suchness of those is the Dharma, and cessation is also the supreme of all Dharmas. Therefore, saying that seeing the three truths leads to knowing the Dharma and attaining faith means following the three truths as appropriate, not as an aggregate. Similarly, the path of learners and non-learners of a solitary Buddha, and the path free from outflows in the case of a Bodhisattva's learning, are also the Dharma, because those are the Dharmas of direct realization. They are not an aggregate, so they are not the Sangha, nor are they the Buddha. Like a rhinoceros, there is no gathering, and its path does not rely on other sounds. The path of a Bodhisattva relies on others.

Because it is not recognized, it is said not to be the Sangha. It is easy to understand that that path is not the path of the Buddha. Therefore, the path of the Pratyekabuddha and the Bodhisattva is Dharma, so all four noble truths are also Dharma. By realizing the four noble truths, one can also understand the Dharma and generate faith. Second is the nature. The four faiths that arise after understanding are also distinguished from the perspective of the object or the basis of the Three Jewels, but only in name. In substance, there are two: faith in the Three Jewels and the precepts that please the noble ones. This is also because with mind and strength, the precepts are also pure, so the cause is named as the effect, and it is expressed by the name of faith arising after understanding. Both of these ways of faith are antidotes to defilements, so they are immaculate and without outflows. The order stated in the sutras is arranged as if one rises from Samadhi and how it manifests. Alas! The Buddha is the perfectly complete Buddha. His Dharma and Vinaya are well spoken. His Sangha of Shravakas is well entered. Manifesting like this, the order is like a doctor, medicine, and attendant. With the power of faith, the precepts are also joyful because they do not disturb. The precepts are like being without disease. Or like a guide, a path, a companion, and a vehicle, because one believes in these, so the order of the four is also like that. The second is the general instruction and the separate explanation of liberation. First, in the limbs of learning, there are two ways of not proclaiming right liberation and not proclaiming right knowledge. The first is divided into two: reality and the difference of liberation. First, then why does the sutra say: Learning is from right view to Samadhi, having eight limbs. Non-learning is from the right view of non-learning to Samadhi, having eight limbs. The right liberation of non-learning and the right knowledge of non-learning, having ten limbs. Saying this, then are right liberation and right knowledge not proclaimed in learning? To be forever certain of liberation from the bondage of afflictions, and to know liberation oneself, these two are established as two. Because learners are still bound by afflictions, right liberation and right knowledge are not proclaimed in the limbs of learning. Bondage on one hand
