Alas! The profound Sutra Pitaka of the Tathagata, appearing profound, endowed with emptiness, the arising and cessation of dependent origination, is the first refuge. In the Vinaya Pitaka, being skilled in transgressions and repentance is the second refuge. The nature of the self and common characteristics of all phenomena is the third. The meaning of the Sutras, and the distinction of names and phrases, is the fourth. The distinction of different names of all phenomena is the fifth. The result of having compassion is that in this life there are no enemies, one dwells in happiness, and in future lives one is born in good realms. The result of eloquent speech is that by abandoning the four non-virtuous deeds of speech, one's words are dignified in all lifetimes, and one's words are worthy of being heard. The result of steadfastness is that in this life one does not degenerate from having taken vows, one embraces oneself and others with patience, and in future lives the deeds of a Bodhisattva are accomplished and irreversible. The result of extending a helping hand is that in this life one benefits others, and the result is that in future lives one obtains vast resources and completes the accumulation of the qualities of enlightenment. The result of explaining profound meanings is that in this life, by explaining the three baskets, one dispels the incomprehension, misinterpretations, and doubts of others, and in future lives one becomes skilled in the five sciences. The order of explaining these five signs is as follows: first, eloquent speech arises from the cause of compassion, and by speaking well with compassion, those who do not tire of the suffering of samsara, possessing steadfastness, are gathered with wealth, and the meaning of the Dharma is explained and taught, thereby ripening them. If asked by which perfections these five are encompassed, they are encompassed by the perfection of meditative concentration, relying on the seed of compassion and familiarizing oneself with the four immeasurables. Eloquent speech is abandoning harsh words and the like, and is encompassed by the perfection of moral discipline, and speaking of the Dharma is encompassed by wisdom. Steadfastness is encompassed by the perfections of diligence, patience, and wisdom. Extending a helping hand is encompassed by the perfection of generosity, and explaining profound meanings is encompassed by the perfections of meditative concentration and wisdom. The five actions, as taught in the scriptures, have already been explained above. Thus, the latter two, through the gateway of possessing the first three, such as compassion, are the superior intention towards sentient beings, and the rest

Thinking of placing (beings) in the extinction of nirvana is called the intention of increasing benefit, because it has the benefit of being free from the torment of afflictions. Thinking of placing (beings) in nirvana without remainder is the intention of increasing mental happiness, because at that time it has the happiness of being free from all suffering such as birth and old age. Therefore, the five, such as compassion, are summarized and taught as the intention of increasing benefit and happiness. The classification of the intention of increasing, such as the impure and pure, etc., as mentioned below. The function of the intention of increasing is explained by "For all those who gather retinues, etc., with wisdom," and so on. Secondly, explaining how Bodhisattvas take birth among sentient beings: Bodhisattvas who have firm intentions of increasing love and compassion for sentient beings do not turn their backs on samsara like the Shravakas, but do not completely abandon samsara, and repeatedly take birth for the benefit of sentient beings, so that sentient beings can mature. They manifest various births, residing in the home and mainly as renunciates. Bodhisattvas, in some cases, often continuously take birth as householder Chakravartins, and in all those births, they do the work of maturing sentient beings in virtue. For all the bhumis, including the first bhumi, there are three ways to obtain renunciation: one is obtained through the Khenpo and Acharya by requesting and performing the four karmas; the second is obtained through the nature of Dharma, possessing undefiled discipline; and the third is to manifest renunciation through a manifested body. Those who dwell in the home have very much distraction, afflictions such as attachment and aversion, and suffering. But the side of renunciation has immeasurable qualities that can avert all faults. As praised by the Buddha, it has various names such as surpassing the mud, surpassing the river, surpassing the impure place, and surpassing the pit of fire. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who is diligent in discipline is a more excellent support than a householder Bodhisattva. The reason why Bodhisattvas take birth in samsara is the intention of increasing the desire for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, so these have been explained, and they are stable in all the bhumis of the Adhimukti-charya and the ten bhumis.
