Twenty-first Chapter: The Chapter on the Ultimate Practice Twenty-first Chapter: The Chapter on the Ultimate Practice This sixth chapter, namely the chapter on practice and the ultimate, contains four aspects of explanation: the signs of a Bodhisattva, the manner of taking birth, the manner of attaining the grounds, and the praise of the ultimate qualities. First, just as one knows there is fire from the sign of smoke, a Bodhisattva will manifest five signs that are in accordance with the practice of the six perfections. From these signs, one can know that this is a Bodhisattva and include them in the ranks of Bodhisattvas. These five signs are: having compassion, thereby embracing all sentient beings; being skilled in speech, able to speak pleasantly about the world and the Dharma; for the benefit of others, not fearing any fear or suffering, being steadfast; for the giving of all things, always being unreserved, readily giving; and being able to accurately interpret the profound meaning of the scriptures. These five characteristics are the signs of wise Bodhisattvas. Among them, embracing sentient beings with compassion, gaining trust with pleasant speech, not being moved by suffering with steadfastness, and through readily giving and explaining profound scriptures, gathering sentient beings with material and Dharma. Therefore, the first is intention, and the latter four are actions. These five signs should be understood as the marks of a Bodhisattva. Among them, the nature of compassion is divided into having intention and having practice. Intention is further divided into the intention of benefit, which transforms from non-virtue and abides in virtue, and the intention of happiness, which eliminates the suffering of the three lower realms and abides in the happiness of the higher realms. Having practice means relying on such intentions of benefit and happiness, and through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, placing sentient beings in benefit and happiness. One who possesses such qualities is called a Bodhisattva with compassion. The nature of pleasant speech also has two aspects, namely the telling of worldly speech and the telling of Dharma teachings. The former is further divided into two types: speech that brings joy, such as smiling, asking about health, etc., making people happy; and speech that brings true joy, such as making descendants and relatives prosper, or increasing wealth and grain, etc.

Speaking joyful words that are suitable for the disposition of the audience. The words of Dharma are the teachings on the perfections (pāramitā), the stages of the Bodhisattva path, and so on, which enable sentient beings to attain higher realms and liberation. Steadfastness is the state of being firm and patient through the power of the three: concentration, diligence, and wisdom. One is not afraid or discouraged by any suffering or fear, possesses power, and does not turn back. The nature of extending a helping hand is twofold: vast generosity and generosity without defilement. The first is giving away inner possessions such as one's head, hands, and feet, as well as outer possessions such as the wealth of a universal monarch. What need is there to mention other things? It is not a small giving, but a vast one. The second is not giving poison or weapons that harm oneself or others, but giving pure things without stinginess and without expecting anything in return. The nature of explaining profound meanings is to understand the intended meaning and hidden meanings correctly by possessing the four individual correct knowledges, and to explain the profound meaning without distortion. The five objects of compassion are: those who are suffering, those who engage in wrong actions such as killing, those who are heedless, those who have entered wrong views, and all ordinary sentient beings who have not abandoned the latent tendencies of their afflictions. The basis or object of pleasant speech is also fivefold: speaking correctly by asking about well-being, making others happy by speaking of the increase of relatives and possessions, speaking words that protect from fear and give relief, promising to help with tasks even without being asked, discerning the occasion, and correctly prophesying by teaching the Dharma that leads to higher realms and liberation. The basis or object of steadfastness is also fivefold: the suffering of samsara, sentient beings engaging in wrong actions, long periods of time, being defeated by opponents, and learning vast disciplines. The place and basis of extending a helping hand are also fivefold: giving vast objects as mentioned above, giving without partiality, giving with respect, giving without defilement, and giving without relying on reward or fruition. The basis or object of explaining profound meanings is also fivefold.
