Abandoning the thought of meaning, abandoning the thought of the fruits of the Lesser Vehicle and the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and in order to abandon the dharmas that become obstacles to entering the first of the noble grounds from the ground of aspiration and conduct, and in order to cultivate from the second ground to the sixth ground inclusive, in order to obtain the seventh ground, the abode without characteristics, and to abandon the faults that become interruptions, and in order to abandon the faults that become obstacles to obtaining the prophecy on the eighth ground, cultivate the four abandonments, and in order to abandon the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining the four analytical knowledges on the ninth ground, by teaching the Dharma to sentient beings, and in order to fully ripen them, and in order to abandon the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining the empowerment of the regency by the Tathagatas on the tenth ground, cultivate the four abandonments, and on the eighth, ninth, and tenth grounds, the three pure grounds, in order to purify the Buddha-fields, and in order to abandon the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining, cultivate the four abandonments, and finally, in order to obtain the eleventh ground, the Buddha-ground, and in order to abandon the obscurations that become the opponents of obtaining it, cultivate the four perfect abandonments. Therefore, intelligent Bodhisattvas cultivate the four perfect abandonments as the antidotes to the opponents of the path from the ground of aspiration and conduct to the end of the continuum of the ten grounds. How to cultivate? The sutra says: Generate desire, strive, exert effort, hold the mind, and perfectly abide. As the five phrases in the sutra say, cultivate. First, desire is the basis of effort. The remaining four are the nature of effort. That is, relying on the aspiration of desire to not generate unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen, to abandon those that have arisen, to generate wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, and to increase those that have arisen, cultivate the yoga of śamatha and vipaśyanā, which is effort or diligence. When cultivating śamatha and vipaśyanā in this way, sometimes the faults associated with śamatha, such as sinking and dullness, arise; sometimes the faults associated with vipaśyanā, such as excitement and distraction, arise; sometimes neither of these arises, and one abides in a state of tranquility. Therefore, whatever arises, one should remember and know
