The obstacles or faults that prevent one from entering the path of virtue are: long-term habituation to afflictions such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance; being influenced by evil companions and engaging in non-virtue; being impoverished of resources and unable to engage in virtue, instead engaging in evil deeds; and being controlled by others such as kings, lords, thieves, etc., lacking the freedom to refrain from evil and engage in virtue. In short, the faults of lineage should be understood as fourfold. Seventh, the virtues or benefits of the Mahayana lineage are: those of the Hearer, Solitary Realizer, and those without the lineage of liberation, if they commit heinous sins such as the five inexpiable sins, they are born immediately after death in the hells of sentient beings. But even if those of the Bodhisattva lineage commit actions such as the five inexpiable sins, they will go to the lower realms only after a long time, separated by eons or many years, and experience the fruits of sin, and will not ripen as quickly as other lineages, as explained in the commentaries. The reason for this is that even if one engages in non-virtue due to the power of the Mahayana lineage, one will have shame and regret, and will not take pleasure in it, and therefore, like other sentient beings, the maturation of non-virtue is also difficult to experience quickly. Even when born in the lower realms, other sentient beings must remain in hells, etc., until the end of their lifespan, but those of the Bodhisattva lineage do not have to stay that long, and can quickly be liberated, and even in that state of the lower realms, they can be liberated by experiencing only a small amount of suffering, just as King Ajatashatru, after killing his father, experienced the maturation of his inexpiable karma in hell for only as long as it takes to strike a silk cloth. Even when experiencing suffering in the lower realms, due to the power of karma, sentient beings involuntarily experience suffering and become weary of it, and therefore generate great compassion for other sentient beings like themselves, and lead them to virtue and bring them to maturity, as in the biographies of the daughter of Sudatta and the merchant Kshitigarbha. Other beings who are not of the Bodhisattva lineage, when experiencing suffering in the lower realms, experience all the great sufferings, and at that time, they generate hatred towards each other, and so on. Thus, the Mahayana lineage

are the four excellent qualities. Eighth, the first of the two examples. The lineage of the Great Vehicle is like the lineage of gold or a great mine, it should be understood. Just as the mine of great or good gold has four qualities: it is the place or basis of many golds, it is the place of bright gold light, it is the place of immaculate gold, and it is the place where gold can be processed. The lineage of the Bodhisattva also becomes the place of immeasurable virtues such as Paramitas, grounds, powers, and fearlessness. Just as the mine or source that produces good gold is the place where countless gold (taking hundreds of thousands of taels of gold as an example) is produced. Just as good-colored, bright, and shiny gold is produced from the gold mine, the Bodhisattva's lineage is also the place or basis of the wisdom light that enables one to know the general and specific characteristics of all dharmas without inversion. Just as the gold produced from the great gold mine has no adulteration and no slightest impurity, and even if it is burned, the luster is even better, the Bodhisattva's lineage also has no defilement of afflictions and becomes the place of Nirvana. Just as the gold produced from the great gold mine can be processed without cracking or scattering even when hammered, the Bodhisattva's lineage is also the place of magical powers that can be processed at will. Second, the lineage of the Bodhisattva should be understood like the lineage or mine of precious and wonderful lapis lazuli, great beryl, and ruby etc., that is, the source. Just as the mine or place of treasures is not the place where iron and bronze etc. are produced, but becomes the place where the lineage of treasures such as lapis lazuli, crystal and pearls are complete, the Bodhisattva's lineage is also not the basis or place of the enlightenment of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but the reason why the great Bodhi that follows the Vajra-like Samadhi and is free from all obstacles arises. Just as the precious treasures are bright and beautiful in color, the Bodhisattva's lineage is also like a mirror.
