种姓的词义是:Gotra(梵文天城体:गोत्र,梵文罗马拟音:gotra,汉语字面意思:种姓),是Guna(梵文天城体:गुण,梵文罗马拟音:guṇa,汉语字面意思:功德)功德和Tar(梵文天城体:तर्,梵文罗马拟音:tar,汉语字面意思:度)度,这两个词的缩写。

Therefore, it is believed that it is impossible for all sentient beings not to have (Buddha-nature), so the lineage will never be cut off. This treatise also states that Suchness is no different for all sentient beings, and one verse says that all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha. The sutra says, "The other mind other than the nature of mind is not luminosity, but refers to self-nature." Therefore, the ultimate meaning refers to the self-nature abiding lineage, the nature of mind, the reality of the union of luminosity and emptiness, as extensively explained in the Uttaratantra. The meaning of these is not elaborated here. The so-called "growth" refers to the lineage of true realization. When a Bodhisattva abiding in the self-nature lineage encounters a virtuous friend, generates the supreme Bodhicitta, and is guided to practice the Bodhisattva conduct, then it is called growth, or the lineage of true realization. Regarding these two, there are other explanations merely from the perspective of nomenclature: Bodhisattvas who enter the Mahayana from the beginning are the self-nature lineage; Bodhisattvas who enter the Sravaka vehicle, and due to the guidance of virtuous friends, enter the Mahayana again, are called the lineage of realization. Also, those with a definite lineage initially, and those with an indefinite lineage who are embraced by virtuous friends and determined to be of the Mahayana lineage, the latter also have this saying, as stated in the commentary. Therefore, lineage means cause, so when abiding in the self-nature abiding lineage, it only has the characteristic of being a cause, and does not have the characteristic of a result, so it is said to be "having non-being." This is spoken from the perspective of merely being a cause. Because the growth lineage arises relying on the self-nature abiding lineage, the growth lineage is the result relative to the former, and from it arises the subsequent path, so it is also a cause. The self-nature abiding lineage is the cause between the Buddha's power and other qualities, because relying on it, the path and the results arise. The etymology of lineage is: Gotra (梵文天城体:गोत्र,梵文罗马拟音:gotra,汉语字面意思:种姓), is an abbreviation of Guna (梵文天城体:गुण,梵文罗马拟音:guṇa,汉语字面意思:功德) qualities and Tar (梵文天城体:तर्,梵文罗马拟音:tar,汉语字面意思:度) deliverance. It should be understood as the meaning of delivering qualities. Because this lineage, from the generation of Bodhicitta, to the stages of adhimukticarya and the ten bhumis, up to the qualities of the Buddha-ground,

Therefore, it is completely accomplished and liberating in the middle. Fourth, although the signs or characteristics of lineage are very numerous, to put it briefly, whoever possesses these four signs can be known to be of the Mahayana lineage, like fire. What are the four? Before engaging in or entering the Mahayana, that is, before generating the supreme Bodhicitta, that person, upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings, spontaneously generates compassion; upon merely hearing the profound and vast Dharma of the Mahayana, even without understanding its meaning, naturally generates faith; upon hearing of the hardships practiced for the sake of others, does not become discouraged thinking, "How could I possibly do this?" but endures with a joyful mind; and naturally rejoices in and delights in practicing the virtues of the six perfections. This is definitely taught as a sign of the Mahayana lineage, while those who do not possess these lineages have the opposite nature. Fifth, the detailed classification of lineages is as follows: Among the three, Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva, the definite lineage, which is definitely determined to belong to one of them, can only attain their respective Bodhi no matter what they do, and cannot attain other Bodhi, just like a stone containing a mineral of gold, silver, or other elements. The indefinite lineage refers to the possibility of transforming into the lineage of any of the three vehicles it encounters, just like some stone minerals that can be transformed into gold, silver, or copper through smelting and the effects of medicine. Therefore, those with a definite lineage cannot be taken away by conditions, even if a virtuous friend teaches other Dharmas, they will attain their respective Bodhi due to the power of their respective lineages, and will not accept other Bodhi. Those with an indefinite lineage are indeed taken away by conditions, just as white cloth absorbs whatever color it comes into contact with, such as red. Whichever virtuous friend they encounter, they will attain the fruit of the path taught by that friend. Therefore, in short, the classification of lineages is these four types. Generally speaking, that is the case, but in this context, we should take the lineage that is definitely of the Mahayana, and the two types that are indefinite but enter the Mahayana due to conditions, because this is the occasion for explaining the Mahayana lineage. Sixth, the fault of lineage refers to the fact that although one possesses lineage,
