The term "lineage" is merely a designation. The realms of sentient beings are diverse and varied. Some are attached to desire, while others are dominated by anger, ignorance, pride, and so on. Some are Hearers (Śrāvakas), while others are Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas) and those with the Mahāyāna lineage. Because of these differences, it is certain that lineages are distinct. The differences in sentient beings' tendencies towards attachment, anger, and so on, also lead to various and diverse forms. As stated in the Varuṇa Sūtra: Regarding a heap of Varuṇa measuring one krośa (approximately 3-4 kilometers) in length and width, one can say, "This is a sentient being of the Hearer lineage, this is of the Solitary Realizer lineage, this is of the lineage attached to desire," and so on. If one were to enumerate sentient beings of each realm in this manner, the heap of Varuṇa or Rilu would quickly be exhausted, but the realms of sentient beings would not be exhausted. It is like that. The term "inclination" also varies due to lineage or realm, with diverse inclinations. Even with regard to food alone, some prefer sweets, while others particularly prefer sour tastes, and so on. By way of example, there are countless inclinations. Even from the perspective of the path to liberation, whether or not a spiritual friend teaches, some have faith in the Hearer Vehicle and not in the Mahāyāna, and so on, which are all different. Similarly, the ability or inability to practice the pāramitās (perfections) also differs. The fruits of liberation also differ, such as the enlightenment of a Hearer being small, the enlightenment of a Solitary Realizer being medium, and the enlightenment of the Mahāyāna being supreme. Therefore, because of observing these four reasons, it must be said that lineages are distinct. If there were no difference in lineage or realm, then because the cause is the same, the latter three, such as inclination, would also be without difference. If one could say that, it would not be the case, therefore it is established that realms are different. Secondly, the Mahāyāna lineage is supreme because the Mahāyāna lineage is the cause that makes the roots of virtue of the Mahāyāna clear and pure, free from the two obscurations. Therefore, it is superior to the Hīnayāna lineage. Furthermore, it is the cause that perfects all roots of virtue, such as the bhūmis (grounds), pāramitās, and ultimately the ten powers, and because it accomplishes the benefit of oneself and the benefit of other sentient beings, it is the cause of accomplishing great virtuous deeds.

Even though one has entered into nirvana without remainder, the Mahayana lineage is said to be supreme because of the four reasons that virtues such as strength and fearlessness are inexhaustible until the end of samsara. Because the four, such as clear and pure virtues, are not present in the Hearers, their lineage does not produce the cause of such virtues. Third, the classification of the characteristics of that lineage is: there are two types of lineages, the naturally abiding lineage and the expanding lineage or the lineage that changes and expands. These two are the former being the support and the latter being the supported, so in terms of categories, there are four. Among them, the naturally abiding lineage, according to the view of the Mind-Only school, is that from beginningless time, the differences in the six sense bases of those sentient beings are obtained by the nature of reality, that is, it is naturally such, not made or altered by anyone, but possesses the seed of manifest enlightenment. Because it possesses that seed, it is considered to have the potential to manifest unsurpassed enlightenment. For example, some types of stones have gold in their ore, while others contain iron, copper, etc., which cannot be changed from one to another. According to this view, there are five types of lineages: the three vehicles' lineages, the uncertain lineage, the seed of liberation, and the permanently severed lineage. Although this treatise also discusses these classifications, the Madhyamikas do not deny that these five types of lineages exist temporarily. Because those who are determined to be Hearers who are solely focused on peace cannot be prevented from it even if the Buddhas try until they have not obtained the fruit of their own path. And those who have great desire and never generate the thought of abandoning samsara, in that case, the Buddhas also do not lead them to the path of liberation. If this were not the case, then the individuals who have attained the enlightenment of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and the end of samsara would be inexhaustible, because sentient beings exist, and even though countless Buddhas have appeared during the time of those sentient beings, there are still those who have not attained liberation, so the view of the Mind-Only school is not unreasonable from one perspective. However, the nature of the minds of sentient beings is the unborn, luminous, and sugatagarbha, and it is impossible to transcend it, because it is the nature of mind, like the heat of fire, so for that nature...
