Pa. The path is not found by gods and nagas, nor by asuras and, Vidyadharas, neither by humans nor by reptiles. As it is said, like a poor person finding a wish-fulfilling jewel, I have obtained the precious human body. Relying on the noble lama, I am able to practice the profound instructions, and I am very happy about this. Without being attached to the appearances of this life, relatives, friends, enjoyments, etc., now I must strive only to seize the path of liberation. If I do not strive, it is more foolish than a captain returning empty-handed from the ocean. Even if the breath is not cut off, it is a corpse; even if the ghost is not carried, it is a madman; even if the breath is not separated, it is a zombie. Therefore, the great master said: Now, when all the perfect conditions are available, strive with fierce diligence to transcend existence. Therefore, when there is a boat, one must cross the river. Just as a hero's army conquers the enemy at the right time, and when water, fertilizer, temperature, and humidity are abundant, one must sow seeds, so in this time when all the favorable conditions for practicing Dharma are complete, do not let all actions be meaningless, but for the agriculture of lifetime after lifetime, for the sake of being able to liberate oneself, resolve to practice pure Dharma, and think strongly in this way. Second, the guidance on contemplating impermanence of life: The key point says: In order to reverse the pursuit of this life, contemplate impermanence and death correctly. Think like this: Taking the essence of leisure and endowment, like a snake entering the bosom of a coward, or a fire burning on the head of a beauty, do not delay until tomorrow, but do it immediately. The reason for this is: Although we have now obtained this rare support, it will not stay for long, but will surely die. Since birth, there has not been a single sentient being who has lived a long life without dying, and it is impossible to even have a doubtful thought as to whether there is such a being. As Ashvaghosa said: On earth or in heaven, who was born and did not die? If you have seen or heard, or have doubts? Therefore, one must die. It is also said in the teachings of impermanence: Like a pond whose water is gradually decreasing, there is no increase but only decrease, all are on the path of death, who can trust the sudden arrival of life?

Therefore, life does not increase but only decreases, so death comes quickly. Like a pond that dries up and its bottom cracks, life is exhausted; like the shadow of the setting sun, life diminishes; like a granary being emptied, life is depleted; like an animal being led to slaughter taking steps, years, months, days, and even mornings and evenings bring us closer to death without us realizing it, which is truly foolish. Moreover, the confidence that one will not die even tonight is unreliable. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "It is not reasonable to live happily thinking that one will not die just today." Like a startled horse or a moth flying into a flame, there is no certainty that death will not come suddenly like a disaster. In short, life is shorter than the autumn mist, gatherings of friends and relatives are easier to disperse than guests at a market, desires and enjoyments are more unreliable than illusions. The Lord of Death comes faster than the evening shadow, which is truly terrifying. The great teacher said: "This life is impermanent like an autumn cloud; gatherings of friends and relatives are like guests at a market; the Lord of Death is like the evening shadow; the next life is like a summer fattened fish; this life's appearance is like last night's dream; desires and enjoyments are like a feast of illusions; meaningless actions are like ripples in water." Furthermore, it is said: "In short, the end of birth is death; the end of gathering is separation; accumulation is the cause of exhaustion and decay." Therefore, the end of birth is death, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, and the end of height is falling, these four cannot be avoided, and the reason we haven't thought about it before is due to negligence. Now that we think about it, our body, like a bubble in water, will surely perish. At that time, as it says in the *Manjushri-namasamgiti*: "Parents are not your refuge, nor are friends and relatives. They will abandon you, and you will go alone to the next life." Therefore, everything one has built, the wealth one has accumulated, the relatives and friends one has associated with, all will be abandoned, and one will go alone to the next life like a hair pulled from butter, not knowing when one will go, so concentrate on this fleeting life like lightning in the clouds and do a Dharma practice that will prepare you for lifetimes to come.
