There are two preliminaries to make oneself a suitable vessel for wealth. The first is: In a secluded place where thorns of meditation do not arise, on a comfortable cushion, straighten the body and relax the mind. First, exhale three times, visualizing that all diseases, evil spirits, sins, and obstacles are completely purified. It is said that this is like washing a vessel before pouring in the essence. Then, generate the mind to practice the profound path for the benefit of all sentient beings equal to space. Visualize the Lama above the crown of the head, and with immeasurable devotion, pray to the Lama Rinpoche, the embodiment of all Buddhas of the three times, to bless my being. And so on, pray sincerely from the depths of your heart for what you desire. These are practiced as the beginning of guidance in each meditation session. The second is: common preliminaries and special close-taking preliminaries for entering the generation and completion stages. The first is divided into two: common and uncommon. The first is: In the root text: "First, contemplate the difficulty of finding leisure and fortune, diligently meditate on impermanence and death, the fruits of black and white karma, and the faults of samsara. To turn away from the wrong path, take refuge in the Three Jewels, and with immeasurable compassion, generate the mind of enlightenment for beings equal to space." Contemplating these meanings has six points: Thinking about the difficulty of finding leisure and fortune, thinking about the impermanence of life, thinking about how karma ripens, thinking about the faults of samsara, taking refuge as the foundation of the general vehicle, and the instructions for generating the mind of enlightenment, which is the root of the Great Vehicle. The first is: From the Preliminary Key Instructions: "First, think well about the difficulty of finding leisure and fortune, and generate certainty." Think like this: Now that I have found the great ship of leisure and fortune, which is a fully endowed support, I must be liberated from the terrifying ocean of samsara. The reason is that now I have obtained a precious human body, with all five senses complete, taken care of by a virtuous friend, met the teachings of the Buddha, have the freedom to practice the Dharma, and know how to practice. If I do not practice the pure Dharma that can surely liberate me from samsara at this time, it will be difficult to find such a support in the future, and it will be extremely rare to encounter the Dharma. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: Leisure

This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to find. If a great person has attained accomplishment, if they do not make use of it, how can they attain perfection in the future? This is what the Buddha said. Why is it called "leisure and endowment"? If one is born in places where there is no leisure, they will be busy with their own bad karma and will not have the leisure to practice Dharma. The three realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals are always tormented by suffering and are busy. Long-lived gods have no concept of practicing Dharma, so the basis for hearing and thinking is blocked. These are the four external states of no leisure. If one is born as a human but has no intention of entering the Dharma, becoming a barbarian; not believing in cause and effect, falling into extreme views of nihilism and eternalism; not having the ability to understand the meaning of words, becoming a mute; and being born in a dark age where there is no Buddha, not even hearing the name of the Three Jewels, these four are the internal states of no leisure. I have not been born in any of these eight places, and thinking of this, I feel satisfied, because I have obtained the eight leisures, and I should diligently practice Dharma with joy. Moreover, I have perfectly possessed the ten endowments for practicing Dharma: I have obtained the human body, the basis for gods to practice Dharma; I have the five senses complete, the basis for hearing and thinking; I was born in the central region where the Dharma flourishes; the gateway to entering the Dharma is to have faith in worthy objects, not following the inverted views of non-Buddhists; I have not inverted the results of karma, and I have all the favorable conditions for the path. These are the five self-endowments. The appearance of a Buddha in the world is rarer than the udumbara flower, but now the Buddha has come into the world; he has spoken the supreme Dharma of liberation; his teachings have not yet declined; there are also individuals who practice following him; and he can also guide others with compassion. These are the five other-endowments. Such a pure basis with the eighteen leisures and endowments is like what the great scholar said: "Repeatedly difficult to find like the udumbara flower, obtaining this body is meaningful like a wish-fulfilling jewel." Except for now, this body is extremely difficult to find, and once obtained, there is no better basis for practicing Dharma than this, so it has great significance. As Chandra Gomi said: What is it that those with great mental strength obtain, who are setting out to guide beings on the path of the Sugata?
