Here, firstly, there are three divisions: seeking calm abiding (śamatha), cultivating insight (vipaśyanā), and meditating on union (yuganaddha). The first is: In a secluded place, possessing the seven dharmas. Maintain the body posture without moving; then, the deity of the generation stage, syllables, and any object such as stones, wood, sounds, etc.; this mind, without fabrication, free from grasping, focus single-pointedly without distraction, fixing the gaze in equanimity. If distracted, again grasp those objects of focus; by doing so, the mind will not wander, and the object focused upon will be held, and equanimity will abide. The three doors pervaded by bliss, one will not perceive years, months, days, or hours; abiding without wavering, calm abiding will become familiar. It is said that, in a secluded place where thorns do not arise for meditation, on a comfortable seat, the legs are in the vajra posture (vajrāsana). The spine and back of the neck are straightened. The throat is slightly bent, pressing the Adam's apple slightly. The tongue touches the upper palate. The lips and teeth are left in their natural state. The hands are stretched out in equanimity. The eyes are fixed on the object without moving, which is the key to the body. Adjusting the tension and relaxation from part to part, one should settle comfortably. Speech should be like that of a mute person, not only abandoning speech but also leaving the breath in its natural state without fabrication. In front, place a painted image, a syllable, a piece of wood, or a pebble, or any object that can be used as a focus. Use it only as a support for the mind not to wander. On it, with eyes wide open, without moving the pupils and without blinking the eyelids, let awareness rest naturally. At night, also fix the gaze directly at the tip of the nose, not allowing thoughts to wander. If thoughts arise, do not follow them, but immediately cut them off with mindfulness, bring the mind back and place it on the object. Even the thought, "I am practicing calm abiding," should not be entertained. Cut off all thoughts of the three times, and without deliberately making any adjustments of tension or relaxation, let go and rest. Similarly, use a loud sound, a fragrant smell, or the like as an object, or rely on any object such as taste, touch, the generation stage of a deity, or vajra recitation. Alternatively, without relying on anything, stare blankly without support, etc., choose whichever is comfortable. By meditating in this way, if it seems that the gates of conceptualization have increased, it means that you have grasped the thread of abiding, so relax awareness and generate even greater diligence. By striving in this way, conceptual thoughts will

Having calmed down from the state (of focus), the body and mind will feel a little comfortable. It is said that if this state is maintained, the sense of the body's existence will disappear, and even the flow of breath will not be felt, thus reaching a stable state. This is the arising of calm abiding with one-pointedness of mind on the six objects (form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma). Secondly, there are also two ways to cultivate insight. The first is to keep the external object of grasping in a state like the objectless sky, that is: Appearances, sounds, all phenomena are like dreams, Various appearances, yet their nature is empty, Like the sky, selfless, free from elaboration, Thus abide. So it is said. Like this, all the phenomena of appearances, sounds, samsara, and nirvana, appear in various ways like the appearances in a dream and the tricks of illusion. However, if analyzed, their essence is emptiness without inherent existence. Together with the grasping consciousness that perceives objects as objects, completely rest in the state of self-luminous emptiness. In short, do not even cling to the thought of clinging to illusion, but rather keep all phenomena in a state of selflessness and freedom from all elaboration, like the sky. The second is to reveal that the internal grasper is rootless emptiness, that is: Then examine the mind like gold mixed with impurities, Where does it first come from, where does it dwell now, Where does it go in the end, what are its shape and color, Thus, by examining closely, this mind itself, Unborn, un abiding, unceasing, color and, Shape are absent, essence is free from grasping, When realizing like the inexpressible sky, In that state, effortlessly relax. So it is said. Examine the grasping mind that measures as object and subject. That is, for the thought that arises suddenly, ask where did it first come from? Where is it now? Where does it go in the end? Where does it stop? Similarly, observe what its shape and color are like. If it has a shape, is it long or short? Who is the observer himself, etc., trace it back to the source without distraction for even a moment. Like this, through careful observation and analysis, it is said that the mind of the observer is something unreal that cannot be expressed anywhere. Moreover, this mind seems to exist, but in reality, it is deluded by thoughts. In reality, it has no essence, so the cause of its initial arising is empty. For the unborn, there is no dweller, so the essence of abiding is empty. For the non-abiding, there is no cessation, so the nature of cessation is empty. Similarly, since the essence of shape is separate from clinging, it does not exist anywhere.
