Flames erupt from the ground, and the Avīci hell is like an iron chamber ablaze. The body is burned like a tree trunk, and one only knows that there are sentient beings when they cry out in agony, otherwise it is just a pile of flames burning. When they escape from there, the four directions are surrounded by pits of fire, swamps of rotting corpses, plains of weapons, and countless rivers of ashes. Trapped within, they will experience unbearable suffering for eons. The cold hells are in a darkness without light, in a great ravine of snow, fog, wind, and ice. The body is afflicted by the cold, filled with blisters, the blisters burst, the cold is so severe that the teeth chatter, and cries of "A-chu" and "Kye-hud" are uttered. The suffering of cracking like an উৎপལ་ (utpala, 乌 উৎপལ་, water lily), cracking like a lotus, and cracking like a great lotus must be endured for a long time. Now, even a slight touch of hot or cold is unbearable, so how could one endure the suffering of the hot and cold hells? I think about it like that. In the realm of the pretas, the suffering is also unimaginable. Those with external obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, and although they run everywhere, they cannot find or see any food or drink. Even if they see it, it is guarded by the messengers of Yama. When they see water and chase after it, it dries up. When they see a forest and go to it, it turns into a pile of coal. Such suffering is unbearable. Those with internal obscurations cannot find food or drink at first. If they find a little and eat it, fire blazes within their bodies, burning everything inside. There is no end to the suffering. Those with common obscurations experience universal suffering, poverty, fear, and helplessness in terrifying places, which are limitless. Now, even a day of hunger and thirst is unbearable, so how could one endure such suffering? I think about it like that. Animals also have much suffering: the big eat the small, the small pierce the big, many eat one together, and many are eaten alive by one. There is also the suffering of being exploited, beaten, and the common suffering of stupidity, which is unimaginable. Humans also have the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, death, prosperity, decline, and so on. Asuras also arise with jealousy towards the glory of the natural gods.

Suffering constantly arises from fighting and killing alone. Even the gods of the desire realm must experience the suffering of death, transference, and falling, like a fish out of water, for seven divine days. The form realm and the formless realm, although momentarily blissful, will eventually lead to falling again and experiencing intense suffering such as that of the hells when the karma is exhausted. This place of the three realms of samsara, no matter where one is born, high or low, is like a patient with constant pain, never experiencing happiness. Therefore, one must constantly think, "I must definitely escape from this prison of the three realms of samsara." Fourth, the refuge guidance that distinguishes it from the wrong path: There is no refuge other than the Three Jewels that liberates from the suffering and bondage of existence. Therefore, the Three Jewels are the supreme refuge. Visualize the refuge field in the space in front of you, take refuge from the depths of your heart and bones, abandon all that should be abandoned, and accept all that should be accepted. Keep the refuge field of deities inseparable from yourself. It is said that the prison of samsara is terrifying, bound tightly by the ropes of karma and affliction, and constantly tormented by unbearable punishments of suffering. The only ones who can protect us from this are the Three Jewels, and there is no one else. Therefore, think from the bottom of your heart that the Three Jewels alone are refuge and support, and take refuge in them. The way to do this is as follows: Visualize that all the ground is made of precious substances, as flat as the palm of your hand. In the center of it is a wish-fulfilling tree, with branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits that are abundant and flourishing, covering the sky in front of you. The branches are divided into the center and the four directions, and in the heart of the center, on a precious throne supported by lions, on a lotus and sun-moon cushion, sits the kind root guru, Rigdzin Terdak Lingpa (Gyurme Dorje), with a beautiful body and a radiant face, whose mind is pleased only with me. From the crown of his head, visualize upwards in order: King Trisong Detsen (755-797), the great translator Vairochana, Kharchen Yeshe Tsogyal, the emanation Padmasambhava, the Sambhogakaya Avalokiteśvara, the Dharmakaya Amitabha, stacked on top of each other.
