Therefore, if feeling weary, recite the mantra of the three syllables and also recite all the mantras for approach and accomplishment, as in the practice manual. When concluding a session or going to sleep, gather all pure vessel and essence phenomena into oneself. That is, the consort and consort, and that, the Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) in their hearts, and that, gradually gather into the nāda. Then, hold the mind on that which is extremely subtle for a long time. Again, gather that, and rest evenly in a state of non-objectification, free from elaboration. When rising from sleep or engaging in activity, whatever appears is like an illusory deity form, whatever sounds are heard are speech, and seal it with the knowledge of awareness in the heart, and dedicate the merit. Second, the completion stage has three aspects: seeking śamatha, generating vipaśyanā, and meditating on union. First, seeking śamatha: In a secluded place free from crowds and noise, on a comfortable seat, straighten the body posture, aligning the seven points of Vairocana's posture, and tighten each part completely. Keep the breath natural. As for the mind, do not let any activity confuse the mind, such as "I did this before, I will do this later, this is right or wrong now," cut off the elaborations of the three times, and rest in a state of uncontrivedness and non-distraction. If you can abide in that, that is enough. If you cannot abide, then visualize a deity form like Vajravarahi in the space in front of you, of whatever size is appropriate. When clarity arises, do not be too attached, but simply gaze at the clear appearance of the deity form, relax, and rest in a state of uncontrivedness and non-distraction. If it is still difficult to abide, then actually place an object of any size, such as a deity image, a letter, a twig, or a pebble, in front of you. Fix your gaze on it without moving your eyes or blinking your eyelids, and without thinking about good or bad, details, etc., and without thinking or meditating on anything, just let go and rest. In that state, whatever thoughts arise, do not continue to pursue them, but return to the object of focus, and without meditating or grasping anything, maintain a state of non-thought, clarity, and non-distraction. If you become dull, then focus your attention, find the tension in your body, arouse awareness, exert effort, and look with one-pointedness. If you are distracted and agitated, then relax your gaze, find the relaxation in your body, relax from the depths of your heart, and rest in a natural state. Similarly, with clear sounds, fresh smells, etc., and the natural state of breathing.

Focus the mind on the three aspects of arising, abiding, and ceasing, without thinking of anything else other than focusing on these, and rest in a relaxed state; or, rest in a bewildered state without any support, etc. It is sufficient to rest in any one of these states. By meditating in this way, at first it may seem that the gates of conceptual thoughts are increasing, but without looking at the good or bad, continue to meditate, and gradually it will become peaceful, and the body and mind will experience happiness, and the complexion will become radiant. Speech will be reduced, and words will be gentle. When the mind is focused on the object of attention, it will naturally enter a state of one-pointedness, as if one cannot rise from the state of non-thought, and does not want to move. It is said that this is a sign of proficiency in shamatha (calm abiding). Second, to cultivate vipassanā (insight), there are two parts. First, to establish the external object of perception as emptiness like the sky. In this way, when phenomena are labeled, these phenomena of appearance, sound, samsara, and nirvana are all created by one's own mind. Other than what appears in the mind, there is not even a particle of truly established essence elsewhere. Appearance is appearance, and truth is not truth. These are all like illusions, like dream appearances, appearing clearly even though they do not exist, just vague and unreal appearances. Moreover, this is merely a label, transcending the realm of elaboration of existence and non-existence, so in reality, even grasping at illusion is not found, and thus it is determined. Whatever external appearance arises, stare directly at its own essence, so that the appearance does not cease. And, because it is free from the defilement of the grasping mind, the clear emptiness, the non-grasping state, will appear nakedly like the sky, and allow it to rest naturally in that state. Second, to establish the internal object of perception, the mind, as rootless. Turn the attention inward, and one's own mind will generate various kinds of thoughts. O scattered thoughts, where do you come from in the beginning? Where do you abide now? Where will you go in the end? What is your shape? What is your color? Without relaxing for even a moment, use the method of tracing back to the source, and let awareness pursue alone. If you say you do not see the mind, then look at the thought that suddenly arises, what is it like? Look at who the observer is, and investigate. If you say there is a real thing, then, like dust carried away by the wind, is it nothing at all? Observe carefully. In this way, carefully observe the three aspects of arising, ceasing, and abiding, and what the shape, color, etc. are like. The observer and the object of observation.
