Because it is a measure that does not err with respect to its object to be measured. For example, like a bre measure and a srang measure. There are three types of objects to be measured: manifest, hidden, and extremely hidden. Their measures are: the measure of the manifest object to be measured has four types: sense, mind, self-awareness, and yogic direct perception. The measure and proof of the hidden object to be measured are: the three reasons of inference by the power of things, as it is said in the Sutra of Ten Dharmas: "From smoke, one knows fire, from water birds, one knows water, the lineage of the wise Bodhisattva, one knows from the signs." Thus, it is the reason of the effect. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: "Slightly possessing the characteristic of arising, whatever that is, all possess the dharma of cessation." Like this, it is the reason of nature. "Those who do not enter into valid cognition, do not enter into non-existence, possessing results, depending on the difference of reasons, some are the result of wisdom." Like this, they are the reasons of non-apprehension. The reason of the extremely hidden object to be measured is: because neither direct perception nor the reason of the power of things can establish it, one must rely on the scriptures of the three pure examinations to realize it. There are three histories of how the science of valid cognition arose, the first is the way the Buddha spoke: Monks! The consciousness of the eye knows blue, but it is not thinking it is blue! Up to "knows blue" shows the non-erroneous wisdom. By saying "thinking it is blue! it is not" shows the freedom from conceptuality, thus clearly explaining the nature of direct perception. Again, he said: Monks! There are two types of knowing form, namely relying on the eye and the mind. By "eye" he showed sense direct perception, and by "relying on the mind" he showed mental direct perception. Mind does not have mind, the nature of mind is luminosity. By this he showed self-awareness direct perception. In all dharmas, the eye of dharma is without dust and free from defilement, completely pure. By this he showed yogic direct perception. Like this, all four direct perceptions and the three reasons that are the basis of all inferences are as previously explained, from the way they are spoken in the sutras. The second is the way the scholars explained it: From the Teacher, the lineage is: Arhat Dharmaraksha, after him is Pandit Mewama, after him is the Wise One.

He also spoke to Vasubandhu. In his youth, he also composed treatises on logic that were famous for debate. Vasubandhu had four highly skilled disciples, among whom Dignāga was more skilled in logic itself. He composed the Compendium on Valid Cognition, which was directly inspired by Mañjuśrī, and its commentary. From Dignāga's disciple Īśvarasena, Dharmakīrti heard the teachings and composed the Seven Treatises on Valid Cognition: the extensive Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika), the intermediate Ascertainment of Valid Cognition (Pramāṇaviniścaya), and the concise Drop of Reasoning (Nyāyabindu), which are the three main treatises like the body, and the four treatises derived from them: the Drop of Reasons (Hetubindu) and Examination of Relations (Sambandhaparīkṣā) derived from inference for oneself, and the Establishment of Other Continuums (Saṃtānāntarasiddhi) and Reasoning for Debate (Vādanyāya) derived from inference for others, which are the four branch treatises. Third, regarding the translation into Tibet: During the early dissemination of the teachings, some of the later parts of the Seven Treatises and the commentary by Dulha were translated. During the later dissemination, Rma Dge Blo translated the Compendium, the Commentary on Valid Cognition, the Ascertainment of Valid Cognition, along with the great commentary. In particular, Ngok Lotsāwa Chenpo made many new translations and revisions, and established them through teaching and study. The transmission of the Commentary on Valid Cognition, in relation to the Ascertainment of Valid Cognition, remained only to the extent that the lineage of explanation did not disappear. Later, Chöje Sakya Paṇḍita greatly promoted it and established the translation and explanation. The fact that the Holy One Rinpoché collated the extent of the Commentary on Valid Cognition at Sangpu Monastery and so on, caused it to become extremely extensive. Fifth, the science of inner knowledge: From the perspective of what is to be expressed, there are three or nine vehicles. Among these, the three vehicles are: the three vehicles of the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas, or, according to the Gongdü: "The definitive vehicle of ultimate meaning, is taught as definitely threefold: the arising guide and ascetic knowledge, the vehicle of empowering means." The nine vehicles are: each of these three is further divided into three, that is, the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas are divided into the three categories of the characteristic division or the vehicle of arising guidance, the Kriya (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) ཀྲྀ་ཡ། ,梵文天城体,kṛya,梵文罗马拟音,kṛya,Action), the Upaya (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) ཨུ་པ་ཡ། ,梵文天城体,upāya,梵文罗马拟音,upāya,Method), and the Yoga, which are called the vehicle of ascetic knowledge, that is, the outer three tantras, and the Mahāyoga (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) མ་ཧཱ་ཡོ་ག ,梵文天城体,mahāyoga,梵文罗马拟音,mahāyoga,Great Yoga), the Anuyoga (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) ཨ་ནུ་ཡོ་ག ,梵文天城体,anuyoga,梵文罗马拟音,anuyoga,Subsequent Yoga), and the Atiyoga, which are called the vehicle of empowering means, that is, the inner three tantras. All of these are based on the impartial nature of the ground, and the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating is focused on the view of how each individual's faculties realize it.
