Latshap Mipham Gonpo said, "If one does not become proficient in the five sciences, even the supreme beings will not become omniscient. Therefore, in order to subdue others, to take care of others, and to understand everything oneself, one should strive for this." Therefore, the science of sound primarily eliminates errors in terms of words, and the science of logic eliminates errors in terms of meaning. These two are the sciences that subdue those who have wrong views about the meaning of words. Moreover, craftsmanship generally accomplishes what is needed, and medicine specifically seeks to be free from illness. These two are the sciences that take care of others, and are therefore called the sciences of taking care of others. Inner science is that which enables oneself to understand all the essential points of the correct, profound, and vast meaning. It has the same meaning as the holy Dharma, and is a different name for it. Because it is the pure quality that, when focused upon, becomes a means of eliminating the obscurations of sentient beings. It is also said, "All suffering and, the holy Dharma eliminates all obscurations." Such are the thoughts in each person's mind. Furthermore, regarding the way of guiding the five minor sciences, which belong to the branches of craftsmanship or the science of sound, some scholars say that the science of sound is added to the four: poetics, lexicography, metrics, and dramatics. But here it says, "Astronomy, poetry, and metrics, lexicography and dramatics, these five, are called the five sciences in the holy land, and their fame spreads like the wind." Thus, it seems more reasonable to count astronomy instead of the science of sound, because the science of sound has already been counted as one of the five major sciences. It seems that there is such an understanding, and those with discerning eyes need to investigate. So, what is the necessity of studying these five? If one knows astronomy, one will not be confused about what to accept and reject in the cycles of time; if one knows poetics, one will not be confused about rhetoric; if one knows metrics, one will not be confused about verses; if one knows lexicography, one will not be confused about the differences in words; if one knows dramatics, one will not be confused about language types. So it is said. Therefore, in the "Holy Bodhisattva Pitaka" it says, "Just as if one with eyes holds a lamp, one can see all forms, so it is."

Virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas are fully understood through hearing. Therefore, relying on hearing, one can understand all dharmas of what to adopt and abandon, both virtuous and non-virtuous. And the objects to be determined through hearing seem to be those five sciences mentioned earlier. Among them, first, it is the right time to explain the science of crafts, because all scholars agree that all other sciences are included in the science of crafts. How are they included? The movements of the body related to the mind and the expressions of speech, which are mainly expressed, are called physical crafts and verbal crafts. What is not related to either of the two, but is dominated only by the thought of the mind, is known as mental crafts. Therefore, the sixty-four arts mentioned in the commentaries of the Extensive Play and the Minor Scriptures, etc., and the thirty crafts such as writing and arithmetic that appear in the Differentiation Treatise, the eighteen categories of music such as dance and dance, the definitions of seven songs such as middle tone and upright, the nine aspects of dance such as charming demeanor, and the eighteen industries such as merchants mentioned in the sutras, the eight types of appraisal such as gem appraisal, etc., all the means of accomplishing what is needed are included in the science of crafts, so it becomes boundless. Now, by establishing a specific name on a general name, painting and sculpture are called crafts. Regarding how the tradition of painting appeared in the world: In the past, a human king named Fearless Protector ruled the country with Dharma, and when people's lives increased to eighty thousand years, the son of a Brahmin died untimely. The king took the Brahmin to the King Yama and asked him to return his son. King Yama said: Because his karma has been exhausted, he cannot be returned. In the end, they declared war on each other, and the battle frightened the whole world. Brahma intervened and painted the Brahmin's son as a picture, resurrected him as if he were alive, handed him over to the Brahmin, and quelled the war. Later, the king went to Brahma and asked about the method of painting. The best of mountains is Mount Sumeru, the best of those born from eggs is the Garuda, and the best of men is the lord of the earth.
