And those who have fallen away from the precepts of the mind, etc. First, falling away from the precepts of the body is: things to be done, such as looking down, etc.; things to be avoided, such as meaningless running and jumping, etc. Second, falling away from the precepts of speech is: things to be done, such as saying "Very good, you have come," etc.; things to be avoided, such as speaking frivolous words, etc. Third, falling away from the precepts of the mind is: things to be done, such as cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, mindfulness, and conscientiousness, etc.; things to be avoided, such as not abandoning attachment and aversion, etc., that is, falling away from the precepts of what should be avoided. Thus, it is said that the faults of the limbs of sentient beings of middling and inferior faculties are also included in these. Furthermore, although there is no distinction of strong or weak motivation and affliction for the root downfalls, if these root downfalls arise and exceed the time limit, then the vows of entering the Bodhicitta are abandoned; the vows of aspiration Bodhicitta are not abandoned until one has not turned away from complete enlightenment. Therefore, the view that abandoning the aspiration mind is the cause of both the root downfall and the abandonment of vows is the view of the Madhyamaka school. Even if a root downfall arises, if remorse arises before the time limit has passed, then the vows are not abandoned; the time limit is the end of one-sixth of a day and night. If an evil deed exceeds one day and one night, it will become a downfall. Second, the precepts of practice are: the mind that abandons the downfalls as mentioned above, together with the seeds, is the discipline of restraining misdeeds; studying the accumulation of merit gathered by the six perfections is the discipline of gathering good dharmas; the mind that desires to accomplish the temporary and ultimate benefit and happiness of sentient beings, together with the seeds, is the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, that is, one should diligently study these three disciplines. As it is said in the Middle Mother Sutra: "Whoever guards the mind of non-virtue, gathers the mind of good dharmas, and matures the mind of sentient beings, should make diligent effort in these three Bodhicittas." And as it is said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: "All the disciplines of a Bodhisattva are exhausted in just these three." Thus, all the precepts of a Bodhisattva are included in these three, so one should abandon what should be abandoned and single-mindedly study what should be taken up. Second, summarizing by the way of protecting them

Thinking about transgressions and the actual method of guarding. First, thinking about transgressions includes: breaking vows, losing the meaning of the name, and falling into evil destinies. First, breaking vows means: deceiving the teacher Buddha, making the Buddha unhappy; deceiving sentient beings to be tamed, making sentient beings displeased; deceiving for oneself, then self-interest is damaged, and it is condemned by the world including gods and humans. The Ocean of Wisdom Sutra says: "If a Bodhisattva, after generating such a mind, does not act as he said, he is deceiving the world including gods and humans." and so on. Secondly, losing the meaning of the name means: like a king losing his kingdom, various inauspicious things will happen in this life, and at the time of death, he will be tormented by sorrow, as stated in the sutra. Thirdly, falling into evil destinies means: in the next life, one will fall into evil destinies and it will be difficult to escape from them; the fault of the root downfall is that all the Bodhicitta roots of virtue previously generated will be destroyed; deceiving the deities and gods, one will generally fall into evil destinies, especially into hell, as it is said: "Sentient beings are the cause of the great hell." in general. Secondly, the actual method of guarding is: the causes of such transgressions with such faults are: ignorance, carelessness, abundant afflictions, and disrespect. Among them, ignorance means: although one strives to learn, one commits transgressions because one does not know the characteristics of transgressions. Therefore, one should listen to and understand the precepts. Carelessness means: although one knows the transgressions, one does not see the faults, or although one sees the faults, one commits transgressions because one does not have mindfulness. Therefore, one should not forget the aspects of what to take and what to abandon, with mindfulness and observing the three doors separately, knowing the wisdom of what to engage in and what to refrain from, and knowing shame for not making mistakes because of considering oneself or the Dharma, and knowing embarrassment for not making mistakes because of considering others' accusations, and cultivating non-carelessness by fearing the consequences of evil deeds. Abundant afflictions means: although one has a little bit of caution, one commits transgressions because the three poisons are strong. Therefore, one should examine one's own mind stream, and diligently rely on the antidote to whichever affliction is strongest, and one should not be complacent thinking that it is not a big deal to violate just this little bit.
