Following the Sutra of the Heart and other scriptures, the Madhyamaka tradition practiced by the protectors Nagarjuna and his sons, and the prince Shantideva, transmitted from the noble Manjushri; and the Mind-Only tradition practiced by the protectors Maitreya, the brothers Asanga, the great teacher Chandragomin, and Jowo Atisha, transmitted from the Bodhisattva-bhumi Sutra and other scriptures, there are these two. Here, we will practice as in the former. Regarding this, there are four: the method of initially taking the vows, the method of guarding them without degeneration in the middle, the method of restoring them if they degenerate in the end, and the method of determining the nature of the vows. First, the method of initially taking the vows includes: the object from whom to take the vows, the person who takes the vows, and how to actually explain the ritual of taking the vows. First, the object from whom to take the vows is: one who has faith in the Great Vehicle, abides in the Bodhisattva vows, is skilled in the general meaning of the Bodhisattva's Vinaya Pitaka, especially in bestowing the Bodhisattva vows and the precepts, and is free from miserliness and other opposing factors of the six perfections. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "The virtuous friend is always skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle, the supreme conduct of a Bodhisattva, and will not abandon it even for the sake of life." It is said that in this tradition, whether newly taking the Bodhichitta vows or restoring degenerated ones, it is permissible to take them in the presence of a support if a teacher is not available. Second, the person who takes the vows is: except for beings in the formless realm and unconscious gods, it is said that all sentient beings who understand language and wish to take the vows can generate them. In particular, one who understands the vast conduct of Bodhisattvas through wisdom, and who, through compassion, wishes to establish all beings in benefit and happiness, possesses special loving-kindness and compassion, and wishes to learn the Bodhisattva's training. Third, the ritual of how to take the vows is divided into preliminary practices, the main practice, and subsequent practices. There are four preliminary practices: transforming the mind with special instructions, making requests to a special object, taking refuge in a special support, and accumulating merit with special means. First, transforming the mind with special instructions means generating renunciation for the suffering of samsara.

P. Refuting attachment to the extreme of peaceful Nirvana, and generating joy in the mind of enlightenment that abandons both extremes, there are three points. The first point is to generate aversion to the extreme of suffering samsara: In order to generate an antidote to attachment to the enjoyments of this life, one should remember impermanence; in order to generate an antidote to attachment to the happiness of existence, one should remember the general and specific faults of samsara. As it is said in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness: "Sentient beings in hell are harmed by the fires of hell. Hungry ghosts are harmed by hunger and thirst. Animals harm each other by eating each other. Humans are harmed by short lives. Gods are harmed by carelessness. In samsara, even on the tip of a needle, there is never any happiness." Therefore, for this reason, it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, you should abandon all other activities to extinguish it. You should strive to prevent rebirth, for there is no other need more important than this." As such, one should definitely escape from samsara and devote oneself to practicing the sacred Dharma with great enthusiasm. The second point is to refute attachment to the extreme of peaceful Nirvana: In order to generate an antidote to attachment to the bliss of peace, one should cultivate loving-kindness and compassion for all sentient beings. If one thinks that samsara is of the nature of suffering, so it should be abandoned, and one should attain the Nirvana without remainder of aggregates, that is not right. Because that cannot benefit others, and all sentient beings in samsara have been kind to us since beginningless time, so if we do not benefit them, but cultivate our own peace and happiness, that would be an ungrateful and shameless act. As it is said in the Letter to Students: "Close relatives are trapped in the ocean of samsara, appearing as if they have fallen into a deep abyss. Because of the transfer of birth, they are not recognized. If one were to liberate oneself alone, there would be no greater shame." Therefore, one should diligently abandon the mind that seeks only one's own peace and happiness, forsaking the benefit of others. The third point is to generate joy in the mind of enlightenment that abandons both extremes: In order to generate an antidote to not knowing the means to attain Buddhahood, one should cultivate the two aspects of the mind of enlightenment. If one thinks that samsara is of the nature of suffering, so it should be abandoned, and even the Nirvana that abandons suffering should not be attained, then what should be attained? Lord Maitreya said:
